All this happened just yesterday,
In a couple hours around midday.
I went to an open house in West Old Town,
In Albuquerque so of course it was brown.
The neighborhood had an entrance gate,
Which I kind of like and kind of hate,
I had to call the realtor to get the code.
No one else there; I was the first to show.
A three-car garage, single story,
Kitchen and bathrooms hunky-dory.
Quite a bit of wear on all the floors;
The hallway had a built-in doggy door.
It was a very nice house,
But not the all-time best.
I wanted a couple more rooms
For our retirement nest.
So I called up my spouse,
Told her I was coming home,
And since it was about noon,
I’d pick up chicken and spring rolls.

I drove to I-40 on Rio Grande;
The onramp was closed, which changed my plans.
So, west on Lomas up the hill,
The dead car dealers were empty, still.
Lots of traffic by the State Fairgrounds,
Seemed like almost half the town.
Community college graduation day;
Why did I order from May Cafe?
Blocked intersections and honking horns,
I cursed the day those guys were born.
Half an hour later I finally arrived,
Cold food on the counter inside.
So much traffic on the streets,
This is the all-time worst.
Cars and trucks on the concrete
When will these guys disperse?
Too many cars on Central,
Too many by the fairgrounds,
South past the Jaded Temple,
I’ll take Zuni uptown.

Colorful tents in vacant lots,
And loaded shopping carts.
I haven’t been over here in a while;
It’s really fallen apart,
Just like pictures I have seen
Of sidewalks in Calcutta,
People living on the street,
Right beside the gutter.

A normal day for these guys
Would be my all-time worst:
To live exposed and ostracized
In hunger and in thirst.
I don’t know what policies
