Some notes about my song. The samples are courtesy of archive.org and are from the film "Aphasia, the road back." Aphasia is the condition of not being able to speak like "normal" people.
https://archive.org/details/aphasiatheroadback
In this field "modality" refers to a way of speaking or connecting with someone else who is speaking, and has to do with various therapies they could try with people to help them recover from brain injury.
When my father had a stroke, he was in the first of the stages mentioned in the film, he couldn't talk at all. One of my other family members had brain surgery and were in the later stage where words were getting misused but you could mostly understand, but they got better. So when I found this video with references to modality and recovery from aphasia I was inspired to do a song.
By no means am I making fun of this condition... it touches my family very closely.
The film is worth watching too. Very interesting. I bet they have much better therapies these days, better than what 1967 had to offer.

Daniel Sitler: that change at :44 was really nice and unexpected. the stronger version that comes in the next time makes for some nice motion in the song.

Ellipsis: nice guitar interplay. very cool sound effects in the solo. i wasn't sure about this one earlier but this solo is bringing it up a notch, love it. is that the talkbox? it kinda sounded like talking.

Future Boy: nice to see you back. very broadway musical here. good bg vox. i do like the mention of dissonance while there is. and the vocal swell there is great.

Hardmonica: bring up that harmonica! it needs to be bigger in the mix. i find myself not sure what the christmas trees have to do with it.

Heuristics Inc.: see my post up there for info on my song.

Johnny Cashpoint: the mix is a bit muddy especially when the bg vox come in. the lead vox is getting lost. good guitar tho. i like the rhymes.

Max Bombast: catchy from the start. is this puce? i like this a lot.

bss: btw this is missing from the r-o-m. love the heavy intro. vocals in the chorus need more strength. i do like the guitars though. and that list of things before the solo, probably because they rhymed.

votes: hinc, ellipsis, j$, max

Review O Matic I'm assuming. Because it was added later and there's no instruction on the actual site on how to reconfigure it (even though Jast has told us at least a half a dozen times.)

I'll be hosting a 'New Modality' Listening Party on Monday 4/10 at 10pm. Might be a little later if work ties me up.
If the new SongFight! is up, I'll play that one as well. Hope to see you there!

Ah, thanks for explaining. I keep forgetting about that thing. I made an "official" download link which doesn't have that issue. I will maybe look into making an "official" review template page which also doesn't have that issue.

I will try to get to full reviews later but just a quick note to say that normally I only vote for a couple of songs (often not even my own if I like other things better), but this fight I voted for almost everything.

To answer the "talkbox?" question re: ellipsis breakdown section, honestly I hit a bunch of pedals, many of which had expression pedals plugged in, and was just sort of riding like three expression pedals at once. One of them was a wah but it wasn't set to do formant stuff, just regular Clyde-style wah type settings.

What's with the impressionist OK Computer album art? Am I the only one who sees it? I like it!

Ha! I had the same thought when JB showed it to me. It's something he made with Midjourney but I don't know what he used for the prompt.

Max Bombast:
Mix is amazing, but I want the vocals a little further forward, although they are perfectly comprehensible so maybe they are fine where they are! I guess I think the guitar on the left is pulling focus due to volume. It's a great jam.

Hardmonica:
Just a really pleasant song, agree that the harmonica could be louder. Enjoy the live feel of it and the country twang. The chord changes near the end to go with "new modality" also work really well, a nice surprise.

Ellipsis:
You are truly the king of fuzz, it makes the whole song. Really like the vocals in the chorus, the wide doubling is great. All the soloing is great.

Johnny Cashpoint:
Fun lyrics, I like the very distorted guitar line but it is very ear piercing. Good vibe.

Future Boy:
I like how this arrangement turned out, thanks to Mo for the guitar part. I think I need to sing more to improve my pitch, maybe join a choir. Feel like the vocals are maybe a little too loud now.

Berkeley Social Scene:
Feel like the bass is stepping on the vocal. Guitars around the side are really nice. I like this song.

Daniel Sitler:
This is fun little tune, I really enjoy how you really go for it with the vocal delivery. There's some slop but it works because it's so sincere, doesn't need to be perfect. The last chord of the chorus reminds me of something I would do, so of course I like that. :)

Heuristics Inc.:
I like a lot of the synth sounds, but overall the song doesn't grab me much. I think part of it is that sometimes the bass and pads don't seem to be in agreement about the chord? Might also be fun if the vocal clips were edited to be more rhythmic and/or melodic.
