If it's not clear, think of the notes in the chromatic scale with 1 = C, 2 = C#, 3 = D, etc. all the way up to 12 = B.

I do feel like I should point out that if you roll 2d6 you cannot in fact make 1, so C is impossible. 1d12 would work better.
