The Ashes

Just been watching Gilly and my fellow Queenslander Matty Hayen destroying the old enemy in the pyjama game - thought it may be time to get a thread ready for the long hot Northern summer ahead.
If my memory serves me well, I don't think the Poms have won anything of note since Agincourt. Now, I know you fancy yourselves this time around - I just hope you can dig into that old Nelson-Wellington-Botham spirit and actually give us a decent game for a change.
I hope your boys can rise to the standards of those great British sporting heroes - like Tuffnall, Henman and Eddie the Eagle.

The only part I got was Eddie the Eagle. He was that really bad Olympic ski jumper, right?

For some informative reading about what the Ashes are and why they are so important as to be worth talking about, please refer to
this factual, historical reference book.

Probably because we were too busy sending our extraneous riff raff to the new colony (so sorry, your home).
Never fear my wee antipodean songsmith, the ashes will return... One day.

heh

- I had to look that up:
...He fretted as he heard it explained that the Ashes were about to be presented to the Captain of the English team out there on the pitch, fumed when told that this was because they had now won them for the nth time, positively barked with annoyance at the information that the Ashes were the remains of a cricket stump, and when, further to this, he was asked to contend with the fact that the cricket stump in question had been burnt in Melbourne, Australia, in 1882, to signify the "death of English cricket", he rounded on Slartibartfast, took a deep breath, but didn't have a chance to say anything because the old man wasn't there..."
So, for our less-enlightened friends of the Western Hemisphere, "The Ashes" is possibly one of the world's longest running and most keenly anticipated international sporting competitions.
Australia has held The Ashes since 1989 - but now, 16 years later - many think England may rise again, as Australia's power starts to wane. We'll see, we'll see...
As long as Shane Warne can keep his trousers on and his mind on the game - we're in with a show.
(NB: With all due respect though to Mr Douglas Adams - I believe the Ashes are actually the remains of a bail - not a stump)

Man,
Its them Ashes time again...excellent
I love cricket..
I mean how cool is a sport that actually stops for a tea break
seriuosly an official tea break in the middle, you dont get that any where else
best thing about cricket .... watching it in bed..wat a great way to spend a day ... you can doze of for a little and then when you wake back up you usually aint missed much, maybe a couple of runs on the board. Anything dramatic, like a wicket will be replayed at the next lull in play.
And then theres the wonder of the game itself---its like a game of chess in some ways, all tactics and position.....silly point or third man or both but maybe no long leg or deep cover. And at the same time its a truly individual sport of man against man..batsman against bowler...
I love cricket me

dont ya love dem crazy cricket terms, couldnt resist using em

I think I'll check back after 5 matches rather than the first quarter of the first match. Then I might crow.

A little crowing at lunch on day one never harmed anyone, and is better than possible tears on day five.

Looks like your tears will be coming 3 days early

- it will be a long summer.
I think your lot need to drag Botham out of retirement. At least he had a go.

It's The Same Old England
Come on, all together now...
Beneath the Southern Cross I stand,
A sprig of wattle in my hand,
A product of our native land,
Australia, you fucking beauty
It's nice of your guys to give Warney an extra day off - there's still a few women left in England he hasn't shagged yet

I think that maybe God was just teasing England by making it look like the last two days might get rained out. That God, always with the wacky sense of humor, you know. Good thing y'all only needed like twenty minutes of day four to wrap up the last five wickets.
