Amazon pulled some magic in distribution by shipping the books early and asking the post office not to deliver them until the 16th. So they got their cheap postal rates PLUS I didn't have to wait more than a day to get my copy, which was waiting at my door this morning.
Kudos to Amazon.

but it's ok 'cause i'm just finishing re-"reading" the last book (on tape).
also reading jeff shaara "gods and generals" which is kicking ass.
i visited antietam, fredericksburg, etc. recently and the stories are really coming alive for me. awesome stuff.
oh wait this is harry potter's thread. looking forward to it. amazon's delivery thang was awesome. i got an email that said "harry potter shipped" and i thought, oh darn it just went out today - but when i clicked on the link to see tracking info it said "delivered" and there it was! on the doorstep!
also, they're giving me a dollar back

It was released on Saturday morning here. Every bookshop, newsagent, petrol station etc had huge walls of the things ready to go. Pre-ordering really wasn't necessary - though I do like the idea of having it delivered to my doorstep.
If they could get trained owls to deliver them - that would be really cool.

Bought yesterday morning (yay Costco!), finished at work yesterday night (yay night shift!). And goddamn, that was an enjoyable read.
Yes, I do read like a starving man at a Vegas buffet.

Finished it the other night. The white doesn't work as well for the grey background, but, y'know, if you haven't finished it yet don't come looking.

I was the most reluctant Harry Potter reader in the world when I was told about the books and how great they were. I was like, "I don't want to read a kid's book." Read the first one and was sucked in after the first 50 pages. Read the first four in a week.
I've read them all now including the newest one. Harry Potter fans won't be disappointed. The conclusion is gripping. Great set-up book for the last to come. Still for kids, but I think they are fantastic. She has a wonderful imagination.

Yeah, I was a skeptic too. I read about fifteen pages of OotP and couldn't stop reading it. Stayed up all night to finish it. And that was with only the first film as a background for understanding. Needless to say, I went through the series pretty quickly from there.
She's really not the best <i>writer</i>, even among kids' lit, but I have to give her full marks as a storyteller.

Unless you have JK Rowling actually coming to your house to personally relate the adventures of Harry and Co. to you - then don't the 2 parts of that sentance contradict each other somewhat? (unless you are what we in Australia like to call a "total wanker", and associate "good literature" with fat books that nobody reads)sparks wrote:

Have you read the trilogy 'His dark Materials' written by Phillip Pullman? If you haven't, go and get it now. As amazing as Potter, but written beautifully too.
In the UK the book has been released with two covers, one for children and one for adults. The same book exactly, just different dust jackets to cater for those 'adults' who are just too embarrassed to be seen reading kids books! We are all kids... Just kids of different ages.
