Computer upgrade

As you all know, electronic gadgets depreciate faster than anything else, especially computers. The price of a new one stays pretty much the same. This question is aimed at those of you who work in that world and are at the cutting edge and have an idea of how fast the newer technologies are coming out.

My computer, Mac G4 dual 1ghz, is about 3 years old now and worth about a third of its original price second hand. It still does everything I need and I have no problems with it. But how long till it becomes a dinosaur? Another year? Two years? I could sell it and get last year's g5 for a lot cheaper, but if I wait then I could lose out on the resale value of this one. My wife says that if I wait a few more months the depreciation of the G5 will be greater than the depreciation of my current G4.

I suppose the general point here is how old can you go and still be sort of up to date. I imagine that this question has been answered before, so please point me there if it has been discussed in depth.

Thanks all.
