I'm so fascinated by this man, but I was thinking, "If this guy, who is an undeniable genius in my book, were a songfighter I bet he'd get panned so bad." It's weird how music sounds different in different contexts. Anyway, I adore this man and I wanted to know what you all thought of him. Also, "And when I come around lately/ it's like visiting a sinking ship" is one of my favorite lines from any song ever written.

Funny, I was thinking about starting a thread about him and Jandek who is apparently from somewhere around here.

Daniel Johnston is without a doubt a fascinating listen. It's like finding some long lost tapes in your grandfather's attic. Although I agree that he would most likely get panned (somtimes its more like production fight around here) I think he would have his fans. When listening to Carol Cleveland I get the same feeling as I do with him. With a lot of songwriters you get a good song or a good performance (maybe both) but with him its like getting an invitaion into his secret world. Music like this couldn't possibly come from anyone else at any other time.

His actual studio work is reeeeeeeeally fantastic too. I just picked up Fun which is produced by Paul Leary and it's a true joy and tragedy all at once.

yeah. jandek and daniel johnston would both be panned here, which is a shame. for what it's worth, i prefer jandek.

I didn't know he had studio work. I thought it was cool that after he got a record contract he still recorded with his old boom box, or whatever it was. I will have to check it out, to see what it sounds like. Thanks.
