Songs and bands you hate to love

(Figured this would be good in 'currently digging' but it could also be appropriate for 'monkey business' so the powers that be may move if they so wish to.)

So we've all got songs/bands that we love, but are just plain embarassing to admit to. That pop act from the early 90s, the hardcore rock band everyone mocks, the stupid rap song, the patriotic country song. So share them so we can make fun of you. All in a loving manner of course.

I'll start off. I'm a fan of the Spice Girls. I even went to their Wembley concert when I was little. They were cheesey and terrible and I cried when Ginger Spice left. I'm also a fan of "Hit me baby one more time" by Britney Spears. Actually I was a Britney fan for a short period of time too.

Now you all get to embarass yourselves too.

70s AM lite pop. Hall and Oates, Gerry Rafferty, stuff I remember sitting in the back of the wood panel station wagon and hearing.
When those "70s AM Gold" half hour commercials come on, I'll just sit there and watch...I can't stop...it's like a drug. Even though I have most of those songs I'll keep watching.

I liked the Partridge Family's Greatest Hits on LP, but have never been quite brave enough to buy it on CD.

I liked "Get the Knack" enough to buy it on CD when I found a copy for $1.95 at Amoeba.

I liked Debbie Gibson's very early stuff, and I have a CD by a girl named "Maarja" who is kind of the Debbie Gibson of Estonia.

And then there's Jeannette Katt's "Pink Mischief." I should probably be embarassed to say I like that one...

I like Men At Work.

No, I mean the band.

Wait, that doesn't clarify anything, does it?

Anyway, I also like Barry Manilow a lot, as I'm sure I've mentioned before. That scene in Serial Mom when she's driving around singing 'Daybreak' at the top of her lungs? That's me, pretty much.

We've been here before, but perhaps my list was lacking...

Beat It (not just for Eddie)

Like A Prayer (simply awesome)

Petula Clarke & Nana Mouskouri (this is my wife's fault...bless her heart. Plus tomorrow's our anniversary, so if I forget, there's this entry to prove my love for her)

Oh yes please Manilow fight!!!

...My tastes are so very broad....Bjam has already blamed me for her love of country music right across the spectrum Jim Reeves, through Hank, Bluegrass, Kenny(Rogers that is though Chesney is fun to see perform just because of the enormous bands of "totty" he attracts), Dolly, George Hamilton IV, Nancy Griffiths, Garth, Reba, and Toby but I am still in love with Martina McBrides eyes and could drown in her voice happily.

I listen to enormous amounts of traditional Scots folk music and will be recording lots of it when I get my own website up along with descriptions of the historical contet of the songs ( I get so many people asking me if Braveheart was a real story......). I have a concept for a gig I would like to tour where I perform a a variety of Scottish Folk songs along with AV presentations of the context and intepretation of the songs for those keen to get in touch with their Scottish genes and to understand what the hell I am singing!!.

Speaking of my folk club roots...for our British audience I also love the comic song musings of Billy Connolly, Mike Harding, Jasper Carrot (Funky Moped anyone?) and Max Boyce even Benny Hill's Ernie.

Lots of light opera and a total sucker for most Gilbert and Sullivan. Boy band pop music of various flavours and of course Spice Girls (Who do you think took Bjam to Wembley to see them) Britney, christina Aguilera ...although I prefer their videos  .....Oooh what red blooded male could not love Kylie Minogue pop musings <lusts>

Did spin the tables as a stand in Mobile DJ in the days of AWB, Tina Marie and Sheena Easton.

gosh have I embaressed myself enough now?

Speaking as your daughter, yes. But that's this is the right thread for that so it's all good.

Everyone I like who you think might be cheesy is actually retro-cool (at least in the places I hang out) Dean Martin, The Carpenters, Abba ...

Oh hang on, yes. Claude Francois (if that means anything to anyone except Nyjm) and Andy Williams. "I think I love you", indeed ....

Manilowfight? Seriously? Is there actually enough enthusiasm for this? 'Cause I'd do it.
