The Song Fight Bulletin Board

We all have one or two: Songs that we were very proud of that we thought were going to be big smash hits but that were relatively ignored or else not given the praise we thought was coming to us, and that even today we look back on and think "Man, that song is still great, why didn't anyone else notice?"

I think sometimes great songs get lost in a fight not because they aren't good, but either because they don't fit in with the rest of the fight, or because the title interpretation was strange, or something like that. Perhaps now in hindsight, out of the context of the fight they will sound much better.

So tell us, what are your Songfight songs (just one or two) that you wish we would all go back and give a second listen to?

I would suggest that my Fight The Sea is a good example of this, but people didn't like it for completely valid reasons. The recording was ambitious, but it was also some of the sloppiest work I've handed in. In all fairness, it's a potentially good song that's pretty unlistenable.
It would have been a good candidate for the 'Cover Thyself' sidefight if I'd ever gotten my ass in gear.

well, i kinda feel like most of my songs are misunderstood by most people in the context of a fight. but that's just me. i think my lack of good production has a lot to do with it.

Ok, so the quality is so-so. But for a song that everyone seemed to like, and thought was quite original, it chalked up one vote. Shame.

This one too. Not as critically acclaimed as Toronto Star, but I was quite happy with my song about the Russian Revolution.

This one came out before I knew about SF, but I heard it later on and loved it. It's one of my few five-star SF songs. Should have said something a long time ago. I love that song.

this is hardly criminal neglect, but i've always wished that people would pay more attention the time signature work in my stuff. the latest 4 entries i've done have featured no 4/4 whatsoever, and most of them have at least a few meter changes.

I guess I thought my "Violet Wants It Her Way" didn't get the credit it deserved... I was trying to do something a little unusual and used a synth patch that swoops between two or three notes for each keypress, and I think everybody thought it was overkill vocal pitch correction (the voice is not pitch corrected at all).

I dunno... I get a lot of comments about how "normal" and outdated my songs are, but then every time I try to do something off the wall, I get "I like your normal stuff better." Oh, well...

I know what you speak of. I have that reaction with your songs sometimes. I actually stopped and thought about this for a few minutes, because sometimes your songs do sound too normal and outdated, and then often the more adventurous ones don't work. Perhaps you're being adventurous for the sake of it rather than being true to your muse?

Also, perhaps people are reacting more to your production than songwriting. I often have the reaction in your "weirder" songs that the writing is weirder than the arrangement is letting it be. Or, well I don't know. Like I said, I mulled over this for a few minutes and don't have an answer. Not that you asked me for one, but, well, there you go.

Ants (Inivisble) - One Beautiful Summer

My wife and her friends think this is the best song I have ever written. I don't know about that, but I think it's my favorite SF song of mine. I'm immensely proud of it, and felt it got a little ignored because it's kind of "hard".

I still love my Prep School, but it never had a chance against Max The Cat and Sober.
