Hello again

Another question. Anyone have any recommendations on good free (or near free) hosting/domain registration spots?

One good one I have found is GoDaddy, in that is seems relatively cheap.

godaddy is cheap for registration of your domain...and great service. I recently registered a new domain there and they actually called me by phone the next day to see if I had any questions about how to use the control panel etc... I was impressed.

webspace, cheapest I could find was http://www.canaca.com. No telephone service, only an email form, and they aren't super fast getting back to you, but the redcar website has been there for over a year and I can only think of a couple of times it went down...and it was never for longer than a few hours. Cheap works for me at this stage. I wouldn't host my big e-business web stuff there...

Thanks. If it was anything to do with ebusiness, I'd have np problem spending the money. But this is just for a little project I have been working on, so I just need something up that can do the job most of the time.

If it's only for a little project you might be better off borowing some space off someone.

Hey kids!

Dreamhost is killing me with email outages lately. What are people using these days for reliable hosting? My webpage doesn't require too many fancy bells and whistles.

Any thoughts?

I had the exact same experience with them, by the way. I have had some outages here and there, but I have been fairly impressed with them thus far. glenncase.com is hosted on Godaddy.

I'm also getting like 50 GB of space and 500 GB of bandwidth for roughly $7 a month, and that's on a month to month basis. I was deciding on whether I liked godaddy before going with a longer commitment, and I think I am going to go with at least a year when it comes time to pay again.

I have been considering going with GoDaddy too. I have heard good things from one of my peers about them. I might use the GoDaddy space to supplement my SongHole space to begin with.

I spend ten a month with blogomania.com and I have way more bandwidth than I can use! They're also prompt with help tickets and give me shell access. :)

Not a bigbrain as regards webspace stuff, but I use netfast.org for my page, (i think this is called something like a sub-domain?) but its completely free, inobtrusive, upload stuff with smartftp, allows direct and deep linking and something like 200mb of space, if its any use to you??!!

Hey, that seems like a good tip for many of the folks here who need a space to host small projects and the like!

Unfortunately, I need a little more space.

I think I may have an opportunity to move my stuff to one of Dreamhost's more stable servers, so my problems may be solved.

It can be done. Just mention that you wish to do this, and they will hook you up. It's why I have two domains based on the same server:

http://www.thehalfracks.com

One monthly hosting fee, two domains.

I use Dotster for my domain registration, though they're not really my favorite. I've been thinking of switching to someone less evil, probably Gandi.net.

I have a friend who provides DNS hosting for me though Dotster also has that as a service which apparently isn't too shitty.

My web space is hosted on my home DSL connection, via Speakeasy. (I could also have them host my DNS for me but I already have free DNS hosting so I didn't see any need to pay another $5/month.) It's capped to 768kbps momentary throughput but I don't have any monthly limit, and since it's essentially riding on my home Internet connection it's IMO well worth it (since I could easily end up spending way more than my total DSL bill for just hosting with the sorts of services I need, and this way I also get Internet service too, woo-hoo). Of course this also means I need to run, maintain, and secure my own server, definitely not for the faint of heart.

Though for most people, Dreamhost seems fine.

I just have some pretty finicky "needs" for things like vhosting, scripting, low-level Apache configuration, databases, etc. which none of the big cheap providers provide, and I host three sites on my connection (myself and two other songfighters) which total something like 11GB/month and growing, as of last month. So it's nice not having to worry about suddenly getting a huge hosting bill, either.
