She recently played for free in SF. Even though I didn't see her, I bought a bunch of her music. Damn is it good. It is funny how when the subject matter is dark her voice is still sweet and bright. The 70s arrangements kick ass too.

Long long time fan of Dolly's singing and songwriting.
Even though the Disco country of the 70's did her a huge diservice (but earned her gazillions of dollars) try listening to her album Little Sparrow for some of the most awesome contemporary Bluegrass you will ever hear.
Also find an old 45rpm of "Jolene" and play it at 33rpm. Coolest most soulful Black Tenor/Baritone voice of all time. I did this by mistake in the 1970's and was totally freaked out at the time but just goes to prove what an awesomely pure voice she has bearing in mind that this was a time before TC Helicon and Eventide units were used to polish vocals.
All round Dolly is a shining gem of musical ability often overlooked for her other more obvious natural "talents" (.)(.)

I love Dolly. I used to make my metal head friends suffer when I drove, I'd pop out ANthrax and put in "AppleJack" or something by Dolly. Ignorant rednecks didn't appreciate good music.

I'm willing to hear an album, although it's mostly because The White Stripes like her enough to cover her. While I interned for PBS, I had to catalog a ton of backlogged news footage and was entranced by fifteen minutes of something along the lines of a Dollywood or Dollyfest which involved Dolly Parton performing live in the middle of an enormous corral with lots of synchronized horse danicng... I was stupified and never investigated further. I guess I'll look for a good listen now.
Dolly Parton still kind of scares me.

Erin and I made it to the show, and it was awesome. She opened with "9 to 5", and also played "Jolene", "Little Sparrow", "Apple Jack", and many others. Apparently she's got a new album of covers of some of her favorite 60s songs, which she pimped by playing some covers from the album, like "Me and Bobby McGee" and "Crimson and Clover". We could see the stage but we weren't close enough to see much detail in people's faces, etc. She played guitar and zither, but one of the many technical problems they had prevented her from playing banjo for some reason (I think it may have been something dumb like they only had one banjo on hand). I didn't know a lot of the songs, but the concert was great. I have to admit, though, we cut out a bit early to catch Emmylou Harris's set a couple stages away, which was also really good.

Heh. Have you ever heard The Sisters Of Mercy's cover of Jolene? They do it totally deadpan and it cracks me up every time I listen.
