The Song Fight Bulletin Board

Alright, so I've been dealing with this annoying hum from my monitors for a while now that just got a lot worse with my new power amp. The manual said there might be some ground problems, and to get a line conditioner or something. So I called up Guitar Center, and they told me I could first try breaking the ground. So I got a $0.99 3-prong to 2-prong adapter and voila! No more hum.

My question is this: that's obviously somehow dangerous. How and why is it dangerous? What protection does the ground provide, anyway? What's gonna happen if I leave my power amp plugged into the surge protector with no ground connection? Is there something I can buy that does the same thing as my $0.99 adapter but is perfectly safe?

i think if you remove the ground then the signal can ground through whatever is handy, like, you. shouldn't be a problem with something like a power amp, where you're not going to be plugging stuff in or out very often. just unplug it and be careful plugging in the speakers and stuff.

the hum xterminator is what you want, but you can get em on ebay for hecka cheap.

Just got the Hum Exterminator from Musician's Friend. It killed ALL the hum. Now I can work on stuff. Best $60 I ever spent.
