screw the SM57!

i was being lazy and left the super cheapo MCA SP2 mic that we were using to record practice on the guitar amp (marshall tube combo) and got this guitar sound out of it:

http://www.sonofsupercar.org/rec/mxl-guitars.mp3

that's unaffected and uneq'd and un-everything. preamp is the presonus digimax LT. gain was at minimum, with the -20db pad engaged. guitar is an american strat thru a rat pedal.

pretty good stuff for a $60 chinese mic. there is some crackling way up top (possibly encoded out by the mp3izer), but the meat of the tone is way better than i'm used to getting. mic was placed in the center of a speaker with about a 10 degree off-center twist because, being a cheap chinese mic, the holder attachment has fallen apart so it won't attach to a stand any more and we drape it over the cab.

when i have tried it before, i have cheesed out the mic. interesting that this one worked.

That sounds pretty good to me. How loud was the amp kicking?

I like recordings where you can tell that the amp was absurdly loud when it was recorded.

loud. not quite two-pair-of-earplugs loud, but pretty loud. so loud that the preamp was turned all the way down and had the pad in.

i've tried using my mca sp2 to mic my guitar amp a few times and it always seems to clip the mic. that sounds pretty good.
