Anyone ever built a dynamic mic?

So a couple months ago I bought a lot of broken mics on the ebayz. I've been fixing them up, and now I'm curious about trying to make one from scratch. A dynamic mic is exactly the same as a speaker internally, with the exception of a small impedance matching transformer.
But I'm wondering if anyone knows anything detailed about the physics of altering proximity effect, polar pattern, and frequency response, and if anyone knows where I can get some thin mylar film.
I went and bought a bunch of crap from Home Depot last night to turn the leftover working capsules into a set of nice drum mics, so we'll see how that goes.
