I'm a newcomer to songfight, although I've been a listener for a while. I'm looking forward to competing (I entered with my brother in Starcommand). I just hope that I'm not up against frontalot on this one. Could be stiff competition with such a good title.

In order of decreasing merit - with some Christmassy catagorising thrown in:

Gold, Myrrh and Frankincense

LUKEHENLEY: Wonderful - I love the nasty mic noise at the end. This really builds up beautifully (equal)

BOSSMCGRAVITY: Great vocals. Great song. Just great. (equal)

BIGMOUNTAINFUDGECAKE: Yeah! Forget the quality - how about that length! This is very cool. It reminds me of something - but I can'tthink what. Whatever - I like it.

Stocking Fillers

MELVIN: You are really a master of your craft aren't you. It's very good - I can't fault it - but it doesn't really excite me a lot. To put it another way - if I heard this on the radio - I would turn the radio up - but I wouldn't wait for the announcers back announcement to hear who it was so I could buy the record.

JOHNNY CASHPOINT: Probably one of the greatest intros I've ever heard on Songfight! Ends up being a pretty good song - but far from your best.

SEVATEEM: I like this. Not really my cup of tea - but I definitley like this. I always find German accents funny.

ROSSDURAND: As always - you make daggy* cool! (err..."daggy" might be an Australian word, I don't know an international equivalent...http://www.wordwebonline.com/en/DAGGY - it refers to a lump of shit hanging off a sheeps arse..) For starters - I think this one wins the head-to-head Durand-Off - nice lyrics and good sound. Not quite up there with some of the others though this week

JORDANSEAVERS: This is pretty good. I like the nice pop-y sound.

STEVEDURAND: Another one of those crazy Durand kiddies! Like Ross - daggy - but cool.
Anyway - I like this - although maybe the panning of the voice in the chorus may be a little harsh.

PHUNTYOURFRIENDS: Finally! You have given me something I can dance to! True - it's a rather strange disjointed dance - but I have a strange didjointed body. Let me warn you - I am going to steal that beat and turn it into a real song!

MANKIND: I don't know why - but this escapes "Lump Of Coal" status - but only just.

Lumps of Coal

RIOMONDO: No. (though I gotta admit - the line about painting Mona Lisas from dogshit and sending them into outerspace...from outerspace really cracked me up )

KLOWNHOLE: Like the intro. Like the attitude. Don't like the song. Shame.

IPA: Nice groove to start - turns into dumb song

STARCOMMAND: Very dull. When I read your lyrics, I thought it was a joke song. But it doesn't sound like a joke song. If it is a joke song, it's a little too subtle for me. Try using a fart joke next time. Fart jokes are funny.

ECLECTICSPOONS: Sounds pretty good - but really doesn't go anywhere

CRICKET: You know I love you SmalltownMike - but I hate this.

CHUCKCHUCKMOOSE: I'm losing interest very quickly...

BALLSTOMONTE: Try a laxative - you sound constipated. Very dull.

Balls to Monte – Blah blah blah. We wrote this about the over-decoration of the holidays. Now, in the fickle entertainment industry, it must seem passe. Cursed fate!

Jordan Seavers – Starts out all Bright Eyes, then the change-up. Deceptively simple arrangement, catchy melody, great harmonies as well. I’m going to have to break your hands and throat. Are you home now?

Klownhole – This song never seems to begin, almost like the whole thing is an intro. The playing and singing are great, it just doesn’t seem to go anywhere.

Sevateem - Yello journalism. This is fantastic soundtrack music. But it isn’t really a song.

Steve Durand – Really great song. Great concept, the dry vocals are effective. The arrangement is good, but the rhythm sounds a bit off. Am I crazy? It’s my only fault with it. Are those real horns, by the way?

Johnny Cashpoint – This is really good (it sounds amazing), but it didn’t really grab me.

Caravan Ray – Did you record the vocals under your kitchen sink? It carries that aura nonetheless. Very paranoid song and recording. Get theraapy, my boy. It's not too late.

Mankind – Expected a subpar Ian Hunter song to start at any moment. Instead, nothing but farting noises.

Rio Mondo – Captain what!?! You crazy sonbitch. I was definitely beaten down into liking this. But I like it, I must say.

Eclectic Sp00ns – Pure energy. Again, no real song here, though the recording is great.

Phunt Your Friends – Rhyming “Godzillaâ€

Balls to Monte: This reminds me of the period in music between new wave and grunge. It’s pleasant, melodic soft rock, but it’s just waiting for an urgent musical revolution to come along and wipe it off the map. Sorry, that sounds kind of nasty. This is well done, but it’s kind of dull.

Big Mountain Fudge Cake: Wicked snippet! But/and it leaves me wanting more.

Boss McGravity: This is pretty awesome. Truly great lyrics, some sweet melodic moments, and very nice background vocals happening. As much as I like it, I’d have thrown in a solo somewhere and edited it down by a minute or so. Then again, I have a short attention span. Still, this is very good.

Caravan Ray: Melodically, the vocals and guitar bits in this don’t seem to know where they’re going. I’d firm up the vocal melody in the verses, and give that guitar line on the right a hook or some kind of direction, and pump it up in the mix. Maybe it could interact with the vocal line somehow. As it is, all the knobs on this track are on ‘five’, and nothing really reaches out, grabs you by the ears, and gives you a big kiss or perhaps a knee to the face. And that’s what I want from a song.

Chuck Chuck Moose: Yes! Feedback is back. This is interesting. Like the laid-back vocals throughout and the sonic ambience. Not crazy about the song, though.

Eclectic Spoons: This sounds like a commercial sonic cliché to me. Like, it would make a good backing track to an action movie trailer, or even one of those pre-movie segments asking you to turn off your cell phone or try the Real Butter on your popcorn. Competent ‘sonic wallpaper’ for such an application, but not much of a song.

The Ill Cricket Crew: Like Bjam, Smalltown Mike has a voice that I like every time I hear it. I don’t really like this song, but I like his verse of rapping. Actually, the guy who comes in at 2:45 also doesn’t sound goofy rapping. So I guess that makes this track about half goofy or so. But there are some cool lyrics throughout, and that last line about ‘singing all night’ made me laugh out loud. You guys sound like you’re having fun, and that always scores a few bonus points with me.

The IPA: “What?!â€

?? - don't really have muh to say about this. The lyric is a little dull but worthy, I guess. I might turn the vocal up in the mix a notch. Ummmm. I felt a bit sick at 'sexy Mrs Claus' line. I guess I like it, but not enough to figure out which band you are ....
Big Mountain Fudge Cake - yeah, fun.

Boss McGravity - heh. This is a really good song, just wish it wa splayed on some better instrumentation. That accoustic is really dull in tone and could do with exciting, and maybe EQing out some of the low-end. The bass is just squidging away like an oozing mud-pool. Which is a shame as I really like this tune. The vocals are well-recorded as well, which suggests mic-ing issues on the instruments? There is something Kinks-like in the arrangement and chord progressions, which is great, but it's all so murky. Also probably a minute too long.

Caravan Ray - Hmmm, treading water lyrically (oh look another song punning about sex) and musically (surf music?) Could be the Garageband Cramps if you weren't wasting the music on yet more Benny Hill 'look at what a joker I am' style word-'play'. Like the Kraftwerk reference, mind.

Chuck Chuck Moose - Never quite lives up to the promise of the opening but that said, there's a lot to enjoy here, but I am not sure that the semi-spoken vocal quite works. There's not quite enough to get hold of melodically to help you into the really good sound-scaping. I'd like to hear in collab with someone who is really cheesy tune-wise - I bet there would be some great results from that. Not bad at all. Like when the chorus hits that's how it should be all the way through.

Eclectic Spoons - Is Electric Spoons already taken, like Electric Prunes? Great drum programming, interesting ambience,. You forgot the tune.

Ill Cricket Crew - Cool opening. Not my bag, whitebread rapping. Probably the best so far, objectively, but i'm not objective. Sorry.

IPA - WHAT IS IT WITH SONGS OVER FOUR MINUTES ON SONGFIGHT? DON'T YOU B*ST*RDS HAVE A LIFE? :) Rock 'n'roll robots are cool, but maybe not cool enough for the number of times it is repeated throughout the song. This is similiar in style to Boss McGravity. Are you named after the Stout? Like the out-of-tune keyboard. Probably don't need the not-very-good response vocals. Not bad.

Johnny Cashpoint - This was meant to be a Little Smokes song, but it didn't happen. Maybe one day. Thanks to Andy for the rhythm guitar

Jordan Seavers - pretty. When the electronica kicks in reminds me of Bright Eyes' last keyboard album, or maybe that guy who did 'Illinoise'. Yeah this is pretty and flicks all the right switches musically and arrangement / production wise. But I wouldn't rush to listen to it again, to be brutually honest, because nothing leaps out at me. I like my hooks and without the words loud enough to make out on casual listen there's not enough to draw me in.

Klownhole - you are getting more prog with every entry, it seems. I ain't listening to 6 minutes of this, but the parts I hear I like in a singger/smirk stylee.

Luke Henley - I've said this before, but you (personally) have to decide if you want to be a) an 'artist' or b) a 'musician'. Unlike other people, in my opinion, it would better suit your expression to be one or the other, rather than trying to assuage both sides of your muse. I mean this seriously because you have an imagination of epicly impressive proportions, but this is, well, just a bit boring.

Mankind - Ben Folds moves into my crosshairs. Do I pull the trigger? No I get someone to play a far too loud brass instrument over all his records and thus destroy his chances of ever having a hit record again. Genius.

Melvin - I set myself the optional challenge of getting to the end of a Melvin song this week. By which I mean everything is already laid out in the first minute or so dynamically, so why should I keep listening? I do think you need to challenge yourself a bit more because this is perfect spikey power-pop that will get lots of votes, but I don't hear anything other than 'doing it because I can do it better than anyone else'. That is a good enough reason, of course, I suppose - but I don't hear any real emotional involvement with the music you are making, which in my book is the only thing stopping you being 'The One'? I got to the end :)

PYF - yes. no. maybe.

Rio Mondo - Oh, my sides.

Ross D - I didn't much like the words when I read them in the archive - it seems a) a list song and b) really preachy and a bit worthy-but-dull. Just a personal thing, maybe, but stopped me engaging. Pretty folk, mind. Parts of me remind me of a Joan Baez song that I can't quite place ... um.

Sevateem - Hahaha could you be more cliche electroclash if you tried? This is great except the drums are a bit flat & slow (would be boring to dance to in a club), but really! Adult. and Chicks on Speed want their joint B-Side back!

StarCommand - Ow! Please to take the edge off of ALL the keyboard parts! Mixing is just not turning them all up as loud as they go! Other than that quite cool, if you want to wear your sunglasses at night.

Steve Durand - Pigbag! Or maybe Was Not Was! I really like this. Could do with some choppy funk rhythm guitar ... oh there it is! Only all the way through the song with a few minor variations would be better. I would also compress the hell out of those vocals so they are a smooth line in the wav/aiff file - they don't need to be mixed like a pop song, because it's the whole song that's the lead, rather than one thing or other. This is great though, and thank god for a song I would vote for in a fight full of good but unengaging songs.

Voting for Steve Durand.

Balls to Monte - Pretty harmonies and stuff. But where's the ass? Stop inspiring me. I want to be bitter.

Big Mountain Fudge Cake - Fuck yeah.

Boss McGravity - Dear lord, what have you done? Oh wait, this is pretty good. But acoustic guitars are still for wimps! You don't sound like a wimp.

Caravan Ray - You sound like you're playing in a cave. Or Bush's ass. I think Bush would rather have Fudge Cake up his ass, though. Still, makes me want to hurt something, and I like that.

Chuck Chuck Moose - Sounds kinda like a panflute. Zamfir played the panflute and I kicked his ass. But you talk about vomit, so this is good.

Eclectic Spoons - The Fudge Cake doesn't like techno. We have the technology, not the techno. I'll let techno belong to fucking Moby or whoever the fuck that is.

The Ill Cricket Crew - Sounds like digital farts. But then you rap over it. Stop that.

IPA - We prefer stout.

Johnny Cashpoint - What crawled in your mouth and died? It might sound better coming out the other end.

Jordan Seavers - I thought I would be able to easily kick your ass until you brought the rock. Now I'm going to back off.

Klownhole - Condense this down into 27 seconds, and it might be Fudge Cake worthy.

Luke Henley - Dude, you need a fucking psychologist.

Mankind - Another one that sounds like it's recorded inside of Bush's asshole. Haha, there's even a tuba. Awesome.

Melvin - I'm wearing smelly Melvins right now. I should probably shower one of these weeks. Is your friend's mom hot?

Phunt Your Friends - Sounds like Tom Waits molesting a sperm whale.

Rio Mondo - Any song about dog shit is tops with me.

Ross Durand - Everyone knows we can put men on the moon. But c'mon, tell me something I don't know. Like how to sodomize cows from the moon while we're there.

Sevateem - We have the technology to make this kind of song too, but we also have the humanity *not* to.

Starcommand - Seas don't have stars.

Steve Durand - You've got tuba, too, but it doesn't sound like farts, so no vote for you.

The winner? BMFC!

Balls to Monte: At first, I had a problem with the faux sincerity of the vocals, but it works really well with the subject matter. I feel sick inside. Mission accomplished! The musical accompaniement belongs in a shopping mall elevator; well ballanced but doesn't stick out in any way.

Big Mountain Fudge Cake: Sounds like making this was a fun time. I liked this even though it barely even happened.

Boss McGravity: Good ass writing! The backing vocals are just enough. The EQ sounds a little flat on these headphones, maybe too little on the highs.

Caravan Ray: That creeping guitar feedback helps a lot with the atmosphere, dirtys it up. Was that "pocket calculator" a Kraftwerk reference? I like the "Oh yeahs" in the chorus. Solid, if a little uninspired.

Chuck Chuck Moose: Drum track sounds like a lo-fi Massive Attack, but the additional rhythmic elements fill it out okay. While the organ/synth in the background is nice, the lead sounds like it might need a little something something. Maybe a filter. Lyrics are too preachy for me.

Eclectic sp00ns: Nice energetic beat with a good feeling of barely controlled chaos. Is this going to be an instrumental demonstration of how "we have the technology"? I don't really have a problem with this, but I was hoping for a little more movement.

The Ill Cricket Crew: I can't hate these raps. Traditional nerdcore sound is what my ears are telling me. Is that a flange-chorus on the hook? Something feels like 1988 to me, but I can't put my finger on it. MC number three hurts. Ouch.

The I.P.A: That's a wonderfull high-pitched noise there in the beginning. Maybe a little too subdued of a sound to talk about rocking so much. It's a rock-and-roll dirge. Maybe I'm missing some sarcasm here. I do like the bass and keyboard in the breakdown a bit past the halfway point.

Jonnny Cashpoint: I usually have a problem with guitar-centric rock, but this is real nice. I have no complaints on this one. Everything fits and it's enjoyable.

Jordan Seavers: Such a full sound after the entertainingly misleading three-guitar intro. The production on this really does it for me. Solid.

Klownhole: What's a "blumpkin" yo? I'm offended! Such a slow tempo for this type of rockin' confuses me. The buildup is almost imperceptable and I worry that this track won't last for it's long playtime. I really do like the pretending-to-take-onesself-very-seriously style. The humor it lends is comforting.

Luke Henely: I have a pet peeve about whiney vocals, so I'm biased. Again, your whimpering isn't heartfelt enough for me to see past it. Please don't blow on the mic though, that's just poor taste.

Mankind: Can't blame someone for playing a real horn in a songfight song. While imperfect (what's perfection?), I like the melodic variation. Where's the theme of this song? Are we supposed to take it on faith that this song is about us having the technology?

Melvin: Nice and bouncy. I can empathize with the lyrics, but can't everyone (that finds themselves reading this site)? Good solid sound.

Phunt Your Friends: Spirits of the trees, please bless this potpourri. In other words, your song sounds like a wiccan ritual. I kind of liked it. Not artsy enough for the scenesters to call it "experimental" though.

Rio Mondo: Jokey song. Another inside thing maybe where the friends that made it find it super amusing, but the masses are all questionmarks.

Ross Durand: I like the writing and the song structure a lot. Real thoughful. Nice, mello, subtle.

Sevateem: This is me. I ain't mad. Didn't spend enough time, but that's fine.

Starcommand: I'm feeling this track a whole bunch. The vocal style suits the instruments like crazy. On some straight-up Peter Schilling "Major Tom" shit. I have a feeling my vote goes here. My only gripe is that it's a little too long.

Steve Durand: Those horns are dope. Is your bass clipping, or is that intentional? Everything is just a little sloppy, but I don't mind that at all. The panned vocals are cool, like a sterio radio drama. Interesting (good) choice on musical style to suit the title.

Did I not id the track correctly? If not, how do I do it? This seems to be a recurring issue.
