What is Last.fm?

I got an email from someone who had heard Welcome to Windows on there, and I checked it out, and they've got practically every song I've ever mp3 encoded hosted on there. A whole bunch of other Songfighters too. I poked around in there a little bit, but decided it would be more fun and more expedient to ask people here.

As far as I understand, it has something to do with an itunes plug in called Audioscrobbler which sends a list of what you play to last.fm. They keep track of it all and publish the results.

There are quite a few songfighters on there.

Heh! Apparantly Caravan Ray has 12 fans!

(Or 'Apostles', as I like to think of them)

Wow. We have 76 fans. Oddly, 38 of them have listened to "The Sound of Music".

Yeah - we've batted around the worthiness of MusicBrainz. I haven't checked them out seriously since they re-launched as a non-profit entity. Has anyone kicked the tires recently? Last I saw it was a disjointed attempt at an open architected metadata project with less reliability than CDDB, though more soul. Perhaps they need a serious SourceForge-osity treatment.

I'm in the same boat. My SoM track is my most played. Remember that it was very popular for a few days because of something.

As a result of this thread, I have now set up a <a href="http://www.last.fm/user/GlennCase/"targ ... k">User</a> for Last.fm

Then I uploaded songs to my <a href="http://www.last.fm/music/Glenn+Case"tar ... ank">Music Profile</a> and created a <a href="http://www.last.fm/label/Glenn%20Case/" ... ">Label</a> too!

Great fun.

ROCK!

Well look at that, even I am on there.

And it's not even for a song I did on songfight.

And the title of the song on there isn't even the title of the song anymore. Still cool though.

Odd, even Sausage Boy is on there. One fan behind Caravan Ray!

Good to see my only win at anything, Constantinople, is number 1.

Now I have seen all this information before, exactly the same figures, same ratios, formats, etc, on a different site .... where was it?

Ah yes, I remember .. it was some Japanese 'web radio site' that turned up over on Remixfight. And also now I think of it, another site as well.

I am suspicious.

Me too. It's the paranoia of living in the 21st Century. :? ... Or is it?

Oh yeah. Lastfm.com.
Though it doesn't say what a fan is I seemingly have 9 of them. Which is nice.

I concur. I want my 5 'fans' named, shamed and punitively pilloried in public.

Nice to see the Turin Brakes naming an album after my meeting with Roymond though :)
