I can't believe nobody's made a topic for this yet.

I saw it last week, it was great. Solid "A." Heath Ledger did fantastically well as Ennis, Ang Lee's direction was spot-on, ultimately it was a very sad story but it had an uplifting aspect too.

I saw this last night.

It's excellent but it's VERY FREAKIN' SAD.


Also, it's edited poorly. I think it's a very high 'B'.

Not a lot I can say about it that won't be some kind of spoiler. If you like gay cowboys (eating pudding?) then go see this movie. If you like to have a good cry then go see this movie. If you are gay then go see this movie.

For some reason I just find the whole premise of this movie to be too ridiculous for me to want to suspend my disbelief. Two big hunky cowboys fall in love on a lonely night on the range, but their love is forbidden by the world they live in. Ugh. It feels to me like the same old tale of forbidden love, with the whole gay cowboy thing thrown in as a gimmick. I don't want to sound insensitive to the difficulties of homosexuals in our society. It just seems like this premise is so contrived. Something much simpler and more present could handle the same themes in a way that would seem to me to be more immediate, relevant, and effective.

but something more simple and present wouldn't get nominated for an oscar.

I just thought it made the premise MORE INTERESTING.

I think it's the whole other way around, that the whole "forbidden love in a big cruel world" thing is the gimmick to sell the gay story.

OK, so now I've actually seen the movie. I think it's overrated and more of a B than an A. It seems pretty arbitrary when they first get it on which made the whole thing harder for me to buy in to. Jake Gylletc.'s character was kind of annoying. Either that or Jake G. is annoying. I haven't seen him in anything else so I can't say. Definitely good acting otherwise, though, and of course the film looks great. I think I liked The Hulk better...

I choose not to support anyone who puts "brilliant" in quotes when talking about Donnie Darko.

Not a Battlestar Galactica fan, eh? I loved Donnie Darko when I thought I knew what it was about. Then the Director's Cut came out and I started to feel a little conflicted about it.

Hmmm I think you'll find it's based on a short story and therefore accusations of gimmickery aimed at the movie are meaningless. I don't recall any great body of homosexual activism to get this film made.

What it comes down to is - it's a period love movie, Lunkhead. Gay, straight, interracial, zoophiliac comes second to the 'romantic drama' angle.

Although I would state for the record that not every 'gay film' has to fit a particular vision of how a 'film for gays' should be presented. That's diversity.

For what it's worth, I saw it. And found it really boring. Not enough bum sex for me so I'll wait for the inevitable porn parody 'Bareback Mountain'

[Spoilers, I guess] I stopped liking it when I realized Donnie was a superhero sent to destroy a parallel universe, which had been created by a time anomaly, in order to save the real universe.

I have to admit, I got that from the cinema version as well. I wouldn't have used superhero to describe it, but yeah, i thought that was pretty obvious?

This is one of the funnier news stories I've seen recently.

Bob Katter, a redneck Member of Parliment from North Queensland said there was no point showing 'Brokeback Mountain' in 'cowboy' cities like Townsville or Rockhampton - because there's no such thing as a gay cowboy. Mr Katter said:

To rebuff - former front-row forward of the North Queensland Cowboys rugby league team, Ian Roberts made his own statement:

NORTH Queensland's highest-profile gay Cowboy has laughed off the suggestion there are no homosexuals living in the state's rugged north....the gay former rugby league international-turned-actor fiercely rejected federal MP Bob Katter's claim that homosexuals are scarce in central and north Queensland's cattle industry.

anyway - just to be on the safe side - maybe I wont barrack for the Cowboys next year - and I certainly won't be "rooting' for them - as you Americans so charmingly say...

No. No it wasn't.

I'm glad the original version is ambiguous enough to have a couple different interpretations, because you can give the movie the benefit of the doubt and assume that it's not embarrassingly silly high-school-level soft-sci-fi. Now I can't take it seriously.
