Hi

I am not shure if I should buy an Audix om2 or sm58. It is going to be used primarily for growling. Any suggestions?

I've never heard an om2, but consensus on the web seems to be that sm57/sm58 is a better choice for utility mic, but go with the om2 if you just want it for vocals.

Something else to keep in mind: The om2 is hypercardioid, where the sm58 is cardioid. If "growling" implies that you're playing loud music, you might have feedback problems with the sm58.

What kind of music do you do?

The Shure Sm7 is the prefered growling mic. Watch that Metallica movie for proof.

The OM2 is indestructible. I described a while back what a coworker and I did to test this theory. We took an OM2 up a ladder in our warehouse and dropped it onto the concrete floor, about 20 ft. We dropped it on the windscreen, on the casing, everything. About a dozen times. A 58 would have been toast. Not only did the OM2 still look fine, it still worked fine.

Plus, you can grind a sales man down on an OM2 a bit. There's a bit of profit on it, whereas a 58 has no room to move.

Also, the OM series mics are better isolated than SM's. That means less hand-noise coming through if you are holding the mic, and less feedback.

I'd say go for the OM5. Way better mic overall, and after grinding, you can get it somewhat close to the cost of a 58.

Or just wait a week or so and I'll get you a hookup through Guitar Center.

Someone offered me to buy his om2 and I cant afford the om5. Have you actually heard it with deep growling? I have heard that the shure 58 has a more 'warm' sound

How much does he want for the OM2?

I might be breaking some kind of industry code by telling you this, but manufacturer's cost on an om2 is right around $50.

If he'll give you the om2 for $50 or less, take it. If you hate it, you'll be able to get as much back for it wherever you might sell it, and you can apply that to a 58.

So I bougt the Audix om2 because of its feedback rejection. Unfortunately it totally sucks for growling. The sound is way to clean and bright.

Can't you address that with an EQ tweak? It's a lot easier to dampen a bright sound than it is to add clarity to a dull sound.

Or can you post a clip of how it sounds? Maybe we can suggest some things to try.
