At one point, I've fit into every one of those categories. Now I'm turning musical tricks for >$500 a pop.

I did a free gig but I sold some CDs.
I counted it as "free" but I guess it could have been either.

I've played real gigs, and made money with them, but it never went to me. It usually goes elsewhere. Not like charity, I just never was really about filling my pocket.

when i was in high school i was in a brass quintet; one of the trumpeters got us a gig on a couple occasions playing at his church, and i think we made like twenty bucks out of the deal or something.

besides that, file me under "free"; but that was me that voted for "...or other informal activity".

I haven't been paid for 20 years - but given exchange rates and adjusting to todays dollars - I think we hit the top category a few times - but it was split between three.

Like CR it's been a few years. Pinacle of my career was when I was 17 and received 150 GBP for performing as a resident for the whole week of a folk festival. Allowing for inflation and currency conversion I have no idea what category that puts me in LOL.

i played a gig for dinner once. nice little place in downtown harrisonburg, va. i think they fed me out of pity.

I usually get 100 bones, but I have played a few gigs that paid 500+ to each bandmate... of course, this is in Canadian dollars...so that'd probably get an American a whopper combo or something...

The best gigs though, are the ones that pay you a good chunk of change, have a room FULL of sweaty, laughing, partying people, a killer sound, free booze, and a room to crash in after so you don't have to pack down or drive home.

aaahhhh... that's the goods.

I have yet to play any show that paid me 500 dollars, but I've come close a couple times (after counting in the tip jar).

I should mention that this type of pay only occurs on New Years Eve for me.

I sang a paid gig with a group but didn't get paid personally.

School group. Some crap about students not being allowed to be paid for school functions. Right. Director bought a couple bottles of wine I imagine.

My jazz quartet had been paid over $500, but my share didn't come to that, so voted the middle. Made quite a bit of money that way.

I'm horrible at making money. I actually feel guilty when I ask for it.

I really need to get over that, because I'm poor.
