SLEEP ROCK / King Arthur
I was staying at a Marriott,
I think it was in Houston
A band was playin' in the bar
So I went down to listen.
He was one of my heroes
From my hippie days,
But his eyes were like zeroes
And his hair had gone grey,
And he was playing sleep rock,
Sleep rock, sleep rock,
Another old geezer just
Punchin' the clock,
Playing sleep rock,
Sleep rock, sleep rock.
I was tryin to dig it,
I really wanted to enjoy,
But I couldn't help thinkin'
"What's happened to the boy?"
He played a bunch of covers,
He played all of his hits,
I recognized the songs
But it sounded like
The shell of a man,
Up there playing sleep rock,
Sleep rock, sleep rock,
Memories fade
Like they was written in chalk,
Playin' sleep rock,
Sleep rock, sleep rock.
I was waitin' for the elevator,
He was comin' out the john,
He said, "I hope you had a good time."
I said, "Hey, what's goin' on?"
He said he hardly could remember
All those crazy things he did;
These days he's got a day job
Living with his kid.
I brought a nasty hangover
Down to the breakfast buffett,
Snarled, "Can we get some bacon here?"
Hheard a voice say,
"Coming right up, sir..."
And I said, "Tell me it's not you..."
He said, "Music's what I love, man,
But this is what I do.
And if all I got is sleep rock,
Sleep rock, sleep rock,
Long as my heart's pumpin'
Gonna give it all I got,
Playin' sleep rock,
Sleep rock, sleep rock."
I left a hundred dollar tip,
I suppose it was a shock,
But I'm in Customer Support,
So who the hell am I to knock
Playin' sleep rock,
Sleep rock, sleep rock,
Keep the fire burnin' 'til
The last Les Paul's in hock,
Playin' sleep rock,
Sleep rock, sleep rock.
