uh, no. why?

i like the wachowski brothers. (i tend to like mcteigue. he does action well.) "the matrix" series was more good than bad (especially when you take "the animatrix" into account.) and "v for vendetta" is a great basis for a movie of their stylings. i'm very interesting in seeing how they adapt moore's somewhat spawling, sometimes meandering but always engaged and engaging graphic novel.

small caveat: i like natalie portman. i think she's a talented actress that got completely shafted by lucas in Episodes I-III. but, in Moore's novel Evey is black and i think that is an important, if understated, part of her character. this isn't a halle berry movie, but what about jada pinkett smith? i'm looking forward to seeing/not seeing weaving, though.

Alan Moore had his name removed from the credits and refused to take money for it, instead requesting that it be given to David Lloyd. This is also what he did for Constantine, which was of course incredibly far from its source. In fact he was in this case so upset about his name being connected to the film that he ended up quitting DC.

Even aside from the Wachowski brothers being awful filmmakers, this sounds like another Alan Moore adaptation doomed to miserable failure.

That's a good article jute gyte linked to. My issue with the trailer is that they completely don't get the point of the graphic novel at all, in any way, ever. It's NOT about violence and blowing shit up. They put fucking CONTRAILS on fucking THROWN KNIVES. That picture says a thousand words about their gratuitous idiocy and complete lack of respect for, among other things, REALITY.

It's as though they wrote a movie remake of 1984, except Winston Smith is played by Ah-nold and he brings a cardboard cut-out dystopia to its knees with the toss of a hand grenade. Or, more likely, several hundred hand grenades.

Must learn to read threads properly before writing acerbic comments and then having to delete them.

It's good. Not perfect by any stretch, but it rivals A History of Violence for the award of "Best Movie Based on a Graphic Novel". I'd probably normally give it a B+, but it was so much better than I was expecting that it gets an A-.

Do you mean good as in, it's a worthy movie on its own, independent of the graphic novel, or do you also mean that it's a good adaptation of the concept/spirit of the graphic novel itself to the big screen?

i heard he also had a pretty big beef with 'extraordinary gentlemen' (apologies if this is mentioned in the linked article, which i've not yet bothered to read.)
i don't read graphic novels or comic books or anything of the sort, so i never go into these types of movie with any kind of bias or preconception. for example, the first 'x-men' was one of the better movies i'd seen in recent(ish) years, and i don't give a damn how tall wolverine is.

from everything i've seen or read, 'v' looks pretty excellent so far, and i look forward to seeing it. i'd advise against strangling, at least in larry's case, since he might take it the wrong way.

I'm being careful to say "Best Movie" in lieu of "Best Adaptation", if only because I'm not qualified to compare it to the likes of From Hell or Constantine, which I have not read.

Wow, I'm torn. Trailer made the movie look like the worst piece of shit in months (based on trailers, would see Pink Panther over it, which says enough), but I'm pretty sure Puce isn't stupid. Hmmm.

I used to live in a house in Berkeley and the director of "LXG" (also Blade 1) lived in an in-law cottage in the back yard. He kept to himself mostly but seemed nice enough. He told our landlady that he had fled Hollywood and given up on the whole insane business of directing and was working on a childrens' book or something.

The problem with the movie From Hell is, as usual, the enormous disparity between the final product and the source text.

I just got back from seeing Vendetta and I thought It was pretty good. The scene with the Benny Hill music kicked tons of ass.

I just saw this and loved it. The people who made the trailers should be fired, 'cos they were all bollocks. I think I read that the graphic novel was a take on Thatcher's England, but this movie is definitely about America right now. It's almost the opposite of those Matrix sequels, which were so bloated and unfocused. This is a really tight 150 minutes that just flies by. Oh, and I recommend seeing it on IMAX if possible, primarily for the sound. It's worth the expense, I think. (Note to JB: KOP IMAX - now 13 freakin' dollars!!! What the hell? Though they did bring back the "screen may look solid" bit, so that was fun...) A

Side note: KOP IMAX? That's the movie theatre that's about 5 minutes from our house. The prices are insane and have been climbing since we moved here.
