I know a handful of us are DIY guys. Matt from Black Lion Audio recommends these:

If you're in the market for a budget pair of passive studio monitors, you might consider the BR1 kit from Parts Express. We recently added a pair to our studio, and find them to be quite good for the money. The assembly was very easy, and took about 3 hours to complete. We found sound quality to be comparable to many passive monitors in the $500-$600 range. Highs are surprisingly detailed, the mids are smooth, and thanks to their ported design, they have ample low end response. The price can't be beaten—about $140 for the pair including shipping.
