So, when I'm not yammering on Songfight or working in the glamorous world of hospital administration, I can sometimes be found floundering in my sideline career as an animator.
I haven't done any animation that wasn’t for someone else in a reeeeeeaaaallly long time, and I’m chomping at the bit to make something “just for me.â€

That's an easy one, Anti-M.
I immediately thought of a great choice. It's short, well-written and I don't know anyone who doesn't like it. It's one oF Songfight's finest songs ever:
"Need Stilts" by Glenn & Rachel.
It runs about 2 mins 40 seconds. If you need shorter, I can find something else.

"A Very Unlikely Occurrence" by The 'Over - 1:29. A cutesy love song.
"A Very Unlikely Occurrence" by Rapper Name Redacted (aka MC Frontalot) - 0:58. Detailed lyrics (like most raps) but pretty vague about what it's actually about, so there's a lot of room for interpretation.
"The Blue Signal" by the Blind Mime Ensemble - 2:39. Eery, abstract, cool.

"Red Robot" by The John Benjamin Band. It was written as a cartoon theme song anyway.
Depending on how much you care, I'd re-record it for you.

I'll pimp my own
Feathers- 2:20 and overly sensitive to the whole extinction issue and environmental responsibility. But I know that really turns some people off
I have thought it would be grand to create a video with the pompous hats worn by women in the late 19th century. This quote clinched it for me:
"By the 1890s, women were wearing whole bodies of birds on hats and clothing. In 1886, noted ornithologist Frank Chapman counted 40 varieties of native birds, or bird parts, decorating three-fourths of the 700 ladies' hats that he had observed in New York City."

Most of the Hell Yeahs songs are right around 2 minutes!

I have to really love the song. I know this may not be a very helpful category – but I want to throw it out there anyway. In order to get this sucker done, I’m gonna need to be in love.
I'd guess that's a given considering you're doing it for 'showreel' rather than payment... So what kind of music are you into?
Phil Redmon put on a sidefight called 'the one' each song was under or dead on a minute. I don't have the link unfortunately.

Ah cool! Thanks for all the suggestions so far guys! I'm gonna check these out tonight after I cook some dinner.
As to what music I like – I’d say my tastes run the gamut – I like a little of everything, but I’m really freakin’ picky. My friends have called me “the biggest critic in the world.â€

I think most Starfinger songs would fall around the 2 minute mark.
I Don't Like Eggplant - 2:36
More Than Soup - 2:10
Please Don't Call Me Ken - 2:21

I'm loving Race to Seven at the moment
but in the interest of self-pimping (and 'poppy and weird') I'd like to throw Those Meddling Kids only glory, 'Evan is getting his teeth' out there. not that it's anywhere near as good as these other songs
