Niveous' Take Your Kids To Work Reviews

Post by Niveous »

Today is Take Your Kids To Work Day and I'm sitting here with my youngest son M. (T is off enjoying the festivities here at my job). So I decided to have some fun. I always have music on at my job and M has already been telling me which ones he likes and which he doesn't. So we are gonna listen to some Songfighters and he's gonna review. And thus, the child is entertained. (As is the community)

Max listens to Glenn Case:

"Prayer for Pancakes". Max likes the title. "All the parts were really bad" (Goes back to putting rubber bands on the Lilo & Stitch toys).

"Oversleeping" Max smiles because he likes the guitars. He then makes the Elvis Stitch dance along. It gets a thumbs up from M. He says "I like the whole thing". The 4 year old approves. He is then distracted by a pretty blonde.

"Please the Pig" He stares perplexed. He wants the song to be named "Please the Guinea Pig". M approves! He likes how loud it is.

Final score: 2 out of 3. Glenn Case passes the M Test.

As M has snack, we will listen to @eclectic spoons:

"Applesauce Baptism": "A little bit amazing and a little bit not amazing". I ask if he likes it and he angrily replies "I said it was cool and not cool". I guess that's a mixed review.

"Up All Night": M begins to bop his head. Again, Cool and a little not cool. "I don't like any of it....okay, I like a little of it." Another mixed review.

"We Are Perfect in Our Dreams": "Too Loud". I guess M doesn't like clipping. He doesn't like it. Sings the WonderPets theme to the beat, making me laugh.

Final Score: 1 out 3. @electic spoons fail the M Test.

M draws as we move on to Calfborg:

"El Balazo": The art work- "We Love Katamari" themed all in Brown. "Pretty Good". He likes it "a little bit". He is quite big on the singing.

"More Than Soup": 3 seconds in. "Hate It!!!" He can't place his finger on why he dislikes it but he's not digging it. I'm surprised as M usually rocks pretty hard- he's a big SOAD fan.

"From This Day On": Purple Katamari art "We Love a New Katamari". He draws a character and names it "Oi!". How punk is that. He votes a loud "COOL!"

Final Score: 2 out of 3. Calfborg passes the M test.

M continues to draw and I continue to not get any work done as we move on to: X-Tokyo-River-God

"That's your band, Daddy?" he says wide-eyed.

"Don't Think I Don't Miss You": "Don't Think I Don't Miss Who?" Repeats 7 times "Dad, I don't like this song".

"Ellis Island": The art has gotten odder since XTRG started playing. Very abstract Katamari art. Names a character One Hundred but writes it "001". "Yup, I like this song a little bit".

"...George Lucas": Immediate hatred despite being a Star Wars fanboy.

Final Score: 1 out of 3. XTRG fails the M-Test.

Getting into the top 3 of Nur Ein has been pretty cool, but passing the M test just freaking ROCKS!

(These reviews are very entertaining, Niveous! Keep 'em coming!)

Up next, Thornberry:

Boundaries (the original): "I don't like this song". "I don't like songs like this one. I liked the other stuff you played not this". M puts head on desk. I play the other version. "It's still the same. I don't like it". Goes to painting with all 8 crayons.

Adonai: "I made a character named Explode". The song is "a little bit scary". That's a thumbs-down.

Sleeper: Rocks out a bit as he draws a talking hotdog. I have come to the conclusion that Thornberry's voice scares small children.

Final score: 0 out of 3. M is not a Thornberry fan.

M turns down listening to Gert to listen to Wreckdom. This oughta be interesting.

El Balazo: M gets all obsessive-complusive over the crayon smell on his hands. He wants to leave to get a moist towelette. "Yeah. I like it. It was a book!"

T arrives and will join the festivities.

Peace Train: M- "Do You Like It". T- "No". Ten seconds later. M-"Do You Like It". T-"Still No." M likes it though.

(replays El Balazo for T. It's a hit.)

Ninja Gang: M is interested in lunch. T says it was Boring. T is hard to please. M thought it was great. Usually both kinderlings are ninja fans. Today a split.

Final score: 3 out of 3 with M. 1 out 3 with T. Passes the M test, fails the T test. I'm willing to bet a lot more will fail the T Test. T is 6. The age of harsh criticism.

So you're teaching these kids how to review songs and deport people at the same time? That rocks. These are fun.

Loyalty Day is up next:

M- "Loyalty what?"

Hollywood Fantasy: T has found my rubberbands. Not good. M- "It's Goodish Badish". T- "It's great". I figured it would win over T. Robots in the bathtub. T makes a mess of the office. Grrr.

Laugh Riot: M immediately starts rocking along then lays down across 2 chairs as T cleans up the mess he made. T says it's great and M thinks it's cool. I had forgotten how good that song was. Downloads for later.

takes a break. Will return to the testing later.

The Loyalty Day test continues with:

Are You Having Fun?: T & M both approve of this one bringing back my faith in my kids love of the rock.

Final score: 3 of 3 on the T Scale. 2 and 1/2 on the M Test. That's a pass.

Next up the kids hear Octothorpe:

Skyline- The kids are dazzled by my Sting figure and my Crow figure. M has already expressed his hate for the song. So much so that he has decided for T that they dislike it. T actually states that he likes the song a little bit.

That's Not What I Need: T is digging the #'s cool jazzy sound but M still has the hate jones for # as he has decided to crawl under my desk instead of listening. T breaks into wild laughter reading this review. Must remember T's super reading level. He'll be reading War & Peace by 8, I'm sure.

Red Robot: T likes the name immediately. M suddenly likes #. The both love the song. Wow, they dig that crazy robot.

Score: 2 and 1/2 on the T scale while it's a 1 on the M test. Pass and a Fail. # is just too advanced for the pre-k crowd.

The Idiot Kings face the fury of a 6 and 4 year old next.

Too Goth To Rock: It's looking good or it could just be the childish glee of finding my tape dispenser. T has decided that the tune is strange. M gives it his seal of approval. T says he likes it but "It's so weird".

1000 Words: M is singing along without knowing any of the words. I love it. T is more fascinated with the "big number". I love M's lyrics including "I was struggling. I was waking up." all in perfect time with the song. Big approval from both of the kinderlings.

Space Cadet: M is a fan. Something about the beats are working for him. T digs it as well, but I think he's getting more of a kick out of the reviews. "Supergreat!" says the kinderlings.

Final Score- a perfect score when it comes to the kinderlings.

As the kids stuff themselves with the chocolate that their mom packed, HInc is up next:

If I Were Italian: Both kids have gotten quiet. Too quiet. And M is covered in chocolate. Ugh. Did I mention that I hate chocolate. M has begun singing along. it's a hit with him. Two thumbs up from the kids.

What We Need More Of Science: The word "Einstein" hits the mark with the kids. And M is digging the Starfinger bassline. T explains to me that the song has driven T to mummify Lilo & Stitch in office scotch tape. Take that as you will.

After essentially kidnapping on my co-workers (Poor Melissa), the kinderlings are ready for the next tune.

We are all famous: M has hit terminal boredom. T is still taping things together. It's getting a bit disturbing. T liked it but M was "bored".

Final score: 3 from the T and 2 from the M. Passing grades.

Bjam time.

ABCD Puppies: The kids are coloring. Wow, how did Steuym lose his accent for this song? The kids miss the song completely. How did that happen? Re-try. M is offended by hearing the song a second time and votes hatred. But him falling out of a chair during the song has also made him awfully surly. T says great. I think I could play LEF now and he'd say great. But we'll see.

Prayer for Pancakes: M is still licking his wounds while T is lost in coloring. Surly Max is not a fan of g^2. T surprises me with a vote of hatred. Things are very b&w right now. Either it's like or utterly hate. No shades of gray with the little ones.

Orange TicTacs: The kids are getting ornery. A kidfight looms in the distance. 3 more hours of work to go. Yikes. Both kids have no clue what tictacs are. Split vote by the kids. But after learning what they are, T says the song is better and it seems to have gotten a passing grade.

Final vote: 2 of 3 by T. 1 out of 3 by M. Passes one kid but M has become vicious.

Next up, the kids meet the sounds of J$.

Scissor Kick: T says that J$ is strange. Wow, so young and so observant. M initially said hate but he's singing along. You never know with kids. T - "Wow, that song was really good!" M- "Bad! Bad! I didn't like it." T says it reminds him of the Backyardigans (???!!!)

Save A Pony: As T rolls up my cubicle like a Katamari, he stated "Great. No, strange. No, strangely great". M replies with a way too loud for the office "Cool".

The Korean War: I'm certainly enjoying this one. T is searching for my now missing Elvis Stitch. T says "It's another strangely great". M resounds "Pop!" and I don't know why. But he says he likes it. Okay. :?:

Final Score: 3 from the T. 2 from the M. A passing grade.

We're back from Work Day Festivities and by request- Duboce Triangle:

Down To The Atom: M is digging it so far. But now the kids are distracted by a kid whose name is Big Daddy. Note the lack of quotation marks. It's not a nickname. It's on his birth certificate. M says that the song is cool and he likes the whole thing. T says its strangely cool.

Tracks for Future Practice: Hmmm. The kids are a bit distracted by talking to the big boss and flashing their new badges. T- "That song is so cool". M- "That's so cool to me too." Well then. Duboce is a hit.

Shreds: M has the little elephant from the land of the misfit toys dancing along. T says that he likes every single word. He is so full of BS. I love him but he's full of it. He's barely listening. He's busy wrapping Stitch up in rubberbands and crayons. M, on the otherhand, is here and involved. And it earns a cool.

Final Score: 3 out of 3 from the kinderlings. They appreciate the SF legends.

Last half hour of the day. It's been a long day. It's always weird being where you are supposed to be working but the kids are here and that means nothing gets done. It's a mix of stress and joy. And the girls get to lounge around at home all day. They didn't wake up until after 12. Lucky.

Last half hour. A random splattering of tunes that are on my jukebox.

"Too Far Away" by Anti-M:
The kids are excited that they'll be dining at a diner in a few minutes. Meanwhile it's more drawing. M thinks the song is great. T says he liked the guitars. Pass.

"Brush Your Teeth (Lullaby Mix)" by Kompressor
M is getting surly. Fist swinging and everything. T says Weird, weird, weird. m enjoys it despite his obsessive compulsion to wash his hands since he was playing with pink highlighter. Super surly kid.

"Pencil Me In" by Tex Beaumont & the Dirty Hearts
M flat out leaves. 20 minutes left. The time really drags, don't it. One of the kids knocked the crown off my King Moonracer. The review is interrupted by kinderlings in need of a potty. We're are gonna call it a day.

Spencer (and I) love the WonderPets!

I didn't actually bring the kids to work today, but Phil brought them by for a quick visit. Spencer got to answer the "how old are you?" question a million times, each time proudly stating "I'm free and a haff" while holding up his 3 fingers. The baby scowled at everyone because it was past her nap time, but she was super cute anyway.

It sounds like you guys had a fun day at the office! 8)
