What's yours? I know it's a dumb poll, but I was just wondering for some reason. Type O is the universal donor and AB is the universal recipient. That's what we learn about in Bio.

Ah, ya shoulda waited 'til they covered Rh factors as well, then I could have a category all to myself (AB negative) like I do in the "how old are you?" poll...

AB negative is like 0.7 percent of the population, Fortunately, we can accept blood from anybody who is Rh negative (that's what the "universal recipient" part referrs to), but we can only give blood to other AB- people. SO when they call me up because of my "rare blood type" it's not because they desperately need AB-, it's because they have someone who can actually use my otherwise useless blood...

I am A+. My ma is ... I think ... B-, and my father is A+. My mom had to get loaded with drugs so that her body didn't attack my siblings and I during pregnancy (or maybe just labor).

I donate blood every 3 months - I really love watching it gurgle out into the little bag. Spins me out.

I also love wathing the meters on the other people in the room as each ml ticks up. I pump my fist to see if I can speed my flow up and squeeze my 470 ml out before all the others. Competitiveness is a bit of a thing with me.

about a month ago i donated blood at work for the first time in my life. it went pretty well, i thought, and they even told me so at the time. but i was thrilled when i got my report card in the mail and they had graded me with an A+.

I apparently have mad cow disease so nobody wants my blood.

i'm probably going to start selling my plasma this summer to help pay the bills. this way some other person will benefit from my "donation," and i'll benefit by earning a couple bucks.

Ha! Yes, I love it how the pre-donation forms you fill out say you can't give blood if you are:

a) an intravenous drug user
b) practise male-to-male sex
c) have been in prison
d) have had sex with a prostitute, or
e) are English

Don't forget that spare kidney you probably have lying around. That could be worth a few bucks. You don't need two corneas either. And the testicles - cash one in now and use the other to produce an onging income stream (you may need to live on a diet entirely of oysters, cos your remaining guy will be trying to do the work of two). And if you buttocks are nice and smooth - you may find a market having their skin grafted onto rich ladies faces (so remember to always wipe thoroughly).

you can't sell blood, but you can sell the plasma. i don't know what makes it more valuable than blood, but i don't really care if they're going to pay me to take it out of my arm. i need a second job. i also don't know the rates. i do know that i can sell plasma twice a week, and i will be taking advantage of that.

I have AB+ (even more of a univeral recipient than KA - I can take anybody's blood) which is about 4% of the population. Oddly Siena is also AB+.
Still the Red Cross ask us for our blood even though it's more useless than KA.

i can't explain this either. especially since when you make a donation of whole blood, they separate it into parts (including plasma) and it benefits three times as many people as just a plasma donation. but you get money for the plasma. likewise, no complaints here.

Another A+ here. And thanks for the reminder to donate. Being a mobile employee the last few years has made donations less convenient (I was a regular 3 monther) but I wouldn't go telling that to the folks who need it. So I'll try and get back on the wagon again...

We usually got orange juice and Oreos. And the NYTimes gave us a $15 credit in their brand store.

Plasma donation takes much longer. Like a couple hours. You have to wait while they separate the plasma, then they put the red cells, etc. back into you. It's not so much that they are paying you for the plasma as your time and effort.A lot of places will pay if you have the correct platlet type as well. Platelets are more difficult to give. Not every one can. You have to be able to spare them. For instance I can't give platelets because I don't have enough to spare. Plus plasma donation is far more draining then average blood donation.


Yeah for type A! Oh and thanks to everyone who does donate blood since I had to have some myself in march.

I'm apparently A+, as are my parents.
