well it's not great big yet, but i'm sure it soon will be.

i'm on my way to bed now, having finally finished most of my daughter's costume, and getting my hands and pants covered with glitter in the process. last weekend she told me she wanted to be a unicorn, saying she could use the old horse costume she had in her closet and wear a pointy birthday party hat or something. the mental image that conjured up was so pathetic (but cute!) i felt obligated to do something to help her have a decent costume. (i am opposed to generic store-bought costumes, by the way, even though the horse one was -- she just needed something to wear to school one day last year and my mom picked that up.) anyway i have constructed a unicorn's horn, of sorts, out of a rolled up piece of posterboard, and have wrapped it in shiny silver tissue paper and attached dangly sparkly silver decoration type things. the horse suit itself, i have just finished spraying front and back with the entire contents of two cans (one gold, one silver) of glittery hairspray. tomorrow morning when we wake up i promised her we will carve pumpkins, and also, hoping that i will be less tired then, i will try to tackle the problem of attaching the horn to the horse's head.

once all this is finished, pictures will follow. hopefully other people will want to join in the fun too! that is -- what are you doing this weekend to celebrate? and please include pictures!

in the meantime, please enjoy these pictures i found from three years ago -- she wanted to be blue (from blue's clues) so i made this costume from a light blue sweatsuit and sewed darker blue felt circles to it. the gloves were made the same way, except with light blue socks.

I tried to find a pastel sleeveless denim jacket so I could be Punky Brewster (well, Drunky Brewster). I couldn't find one, and I didn't want to have to buy a jacket and then dye it and cut off the sleeves because that seemed like a lot of work and something was bound to get unnecessarily dyed lavender.

Dejected, I briefly entertained being Olive Oyl, Joan Jett or Glenn Danzig before realizing I would be setting myself up for heartbreak when I couldn't find the right red shirt with frilly collar and cuffs, and that even with a perfect JJ or GD costume, people still wouldn't know who I was.

So I said fuckit and looked in my closet and realized I could be a vampire if I bought some fake blood. So, there's that.

Yesterday my work had a costume contest that only 30 of our 700 employees participated in, some people just don't know how to have fun. See my avatar for my costume. I was the Capella University Vampire and I won for "scariest costume" only becuase I was the only scary costume! I am a firm believer that Halloween costumes should be scary. This year our son, who just turned two, will be a bat. I will post a picture once we have carved the pumpkins and he has dressed up. Fun!

So, Hallowe'en with my folks is a yearly shindig with my hippyish parents. Lots of indulgences. Big party with awesome decorations done by my step father. Most of my pals hit the streets and I'll prolly do the same after the party. Last year I went as Dali and this year I'm going as Hendrix. Got a great fro. I call these years where Hallowe'en lands on a Sunday the long Hallowe'en weekend. One of the few weekends where Hallowe'en parties three days in a row. Partay time!!!

You celebrate halloween in Canada? I thought it was just a USA thing.
Apart from some vague assosiation with pumpkins and weird episides of The Simpsons - we don't really get the halloween thing down here.

Yeah... Halloween is only celebrated in The states... that and Christmas... Easter... Rememberance Day... right.

Just when you think the ignorance of americans regarding the rest of the fucking planet is a myth... you get this. Sigh.

Biggest dissapointmetn of Halloween gig I did: our guitarist picks his godamn sister to win the $100 for best costume. disgusting. (The costume sucked... she was "Jim Belushi" but completely thin... basically wore a suit and hat.... lame lame lame. )

First off, it was Caravan Ray from Australia to throw out the "USA" only thing, so shame on me, (and obviously a valid question when I think about it) and second, yeah, I meant John. Which is funny, cause she said Jim, which makes her win even more retarded.

So, sorry to the Yanks for calling you out on ingnorance regarding Canadians... I guess I've proven your not the only ones to stereotype...

Ha! - Yeah, I thought the response seemed a bit harsh...

As I'd said - we don't celebrate it here. I had heard a few years ago that in some suburbs in Sydney, kids brought up on American TV were starting to get dressed up on Halloween and knock on peoples doors hoping to get given stuff. Pretty much all they would have got was told to "Fuck Off" so I don't think it really caught on. I've never seen kids doing it - but then again, I've got a big scary dog who frightens children away (and who in the last 10 minutes has reduced Brisbane's ring-tailed possum population by 1 - bad dog!)
