No - I disagree. Just because a song is slow and sounds like shit doen't make it a ballad.

I always thought a ballad was a story told to music - like Johnny Horton's 'The Battle of New Orleans' or the 'Theme to the Beverly Hillbillys' or 'Peppermint Patty' by Phunt somethingorother. Or 'The Gambler' by Kenny Rogers. Or 'Convoy'...

(BTW: thanks for translating PJ's post - I didn't know what he was on about. Wasn't sure if he was talking about our Earth-based governments, or those from his home planet.)

...or 'Rocky Racoon', or 'Detatchable Penis' by King Missile...or that cheesecake song by King Missile...

Both definitions are correct. You listed more ballads (songs that tell a story). I listed power ballads (a love song done with rock instruments). Your answer is the true more traditional meaning. Mine is a misnomer that has stuck throughout time.

...and "I Hate You" by Caravan Ray. (I knew I'd done a ballad somewhere - it took a while to remember it) Possibly 'Les Anchois', too

Definition 4 in The Macquarie Dictionary is '"a slick and sentimentalised pop song". I'd like to see that definition destroyed and the word ballad be only applied to songs that start with lyrics such as:
"Big Sam left Seattle in the year of ninety-two, with George Pratt, his partner, and brother, Billy, too....",
or
"In 1814 we took a little trip, Along with Colonel. Jackson
down the mighty Mississip..."

or
"In May of nineteen forty-one the war had just begun
The Germans had the biggest ship that had the biggest guns..."

God Bless You Johnny Horton, wherever you are.

let anarchy reign. 8)

"ballad" is just a word used in song titles when the songwrite can't think of a good song title. i call this one "the ballad of i don't give a fuck."

The Ballad of Caravan Ray

before i vote: does "none" mean i feel there should be neither more nor less governmental control, or does "none" mean i feel there should be none whatsoever? (i guess this is a silly question, because if i felt there should be none, obviously i feel there should be less than there is. but it DOES say "none" and not "neither".)

It's not a silly question, it's a silly poll.

none would be complete anarchy
i put this in there for those that believe that the government has nothing more to offer...
and instead of living off of us as if they were some hierarchy rat
we could make all fend for themselves...
complete chaos in the streets...
but it's the only long lasting solution
to a relatively old problem...
world domination is at hand
and we're all commodity easily handed over...

i guess it depends on how you wanna look at it...
but though none would be less... less is not entirely deplete of government organization
while as none is void of any outside control...
leaving mankind to it's own evil vices and there assuring
a full on middle age effect... where we all go back to our primal instincts
and lose these petty pussy fears that are rather new of mankind

well old in a way... but not as void as now...
anyhow yea... hopefully that helps you understand better as the stance of 'none'... on this 'silly poll' some would say...
enough for now

(as some believe it's far too late to go without any control... for the numbers are uncontrollable... and rather self-serving... and not very bright on natural instinct... so i guess it depends on what matters most...
stability... or freedom... as it is... stability and social standings keep up the layers of right and wrong in our societies... and easily led around like dogs we are... we'd react rather poorly to freedom if you ask me...
but ehhh... can't hurt any worse from my point of view)

if that's the case, i'm abstaining, as i feel there should be neither more nor less, and certainly not none. johnny, i meant MY question was silly; i was not judging the original poll (which by its own admission is indeed silly).

Do we mean more control of me from my government, or more control of me from your government?

I don't think I could take having three goverments. Hell, I can hardly take that we still serve the Queen.

The results of this poll are surprising to me.

Perhaps a clarification of "government control" is in order.

I see "government control" and I think things like "regulation of unchecked capitalism" (i.e. minimum wages, child labor laws etc) or "environmental controls to keep corporations from raping the environment."

Then again, I suppose "government control" could also mean "controlling what you read" and "monitoring your internet / library habits."

Hmmmm!

A Cashpoint controlled House of Parliment? Sounds workable, to me.

Use the SongFight format? Bills have a week to be made and then submitted, and everyone votes on which bill is the best. SideBills would be interesting. Or CoverBills.

yea i completely feel violated in a way... it bothers me... how much control there is...
everything is owned...
you have to go through hell and high tide... just to be able to fish legally... (this is just fishing... not even anything 'big')
we're being regulated in living in every style and fashion...
and it feels completely patronizing... it's agonizing to watch, what is happening right before my eyes...
but i suppose i see things a little too harshly... one must have hopes i suppose...
i guess i just am losing sight of hope in 'things'...
big corporate industries... taking over any hopes of the average day man
less and less jobs... more and more fees and controls...
i just see it all spiralling downhill... and unless you know the 'right' people... you're fucked... and it feels very socialistic... just the idea oozes from my tv set like a bad teenage drama...
these lyrics on the radio reek of complete propaganda in bullshit... and i fill as though i have hardly the right to walk now that my right in avoiding any of these means... is completely illegal and unheard of...
i feel trapped... and it sucks...
our ships going down... and i'm tied to the deckfloor...
(anyhow... i shall stop my long winded rant of nonsense)

yea it's a bad habit of mine... see to me social standings are different from the pure idea of socialism... but the standards are still being held... but the reality of it... is long forgotten...
i guess it's hard for me to explain... i just know it's not as nice as 'socialist' countries... trust me... i do not believe this haha...
it's like the idea of socialism... with a front of own personal gain...

uhm... denyer... i don't necessarily 'hate' america... in a whole... the concept is great...
the reality is nonsense... and twisted and very much propaganda... so i would appreciate it, if you wouldn't put words in my mouth
