Funny Games remake

An American remake of Funny Games is currently in pre-production. Even more strangely, it's being directed by Haneke. The original is one of my favorite movies and I have a hard time imagining this remake turning out well, Haneke or no. I also have trouble figuring out what possible motivation anyone involved could have for this project. What's the deal?
