Jim - how did this go? I assume it will bring a flood of MS visiters to SF and no doubt a buy-out and an ME version.

I would totally beat Sousa's ass in a Songfight.

Hi, I'm still here. It really happened, and it was a lovely affair. 85 degrees and balmy in the park. Particularly poignant for me since American in Paris was also on the program and that's about my favorite all-time hunk of music.

Despite the Sousa and the Tchaikovsky and all, mine was definitely the most anticipated, being the fun "gimmick" piece. But, I must say in all honesty they really didn't pull it off. There were planes flying overhead and the orchestration is subtle and nuanced and all that, so a lot of it was lost. Plus, by the conductor's own admission, the players couldn't really handle a lot of it. He tried simplifying it in rehersal, and that made some difference, but in my opinion it plain old "didn't work". Too tough for this community orchestra. Ah well.

There was a BBQ at my house afterward, and people were kind, but hey, I knew as well as anyone it didn't sound all that great. Fortunately, my wife hit her head galumphing down the stairs and had to be rushed to the ER to get 3 staples in the top of her head. So the attention was totally off my piece. She's fine, btw. Holy hell, what a day.

A fan of mine had called the local public radio jazz station to do a bit on the piece which would have been terrific publicity for Songfight, but being 4th of July weekend, the prodcuer couldn't get it together.

And no, there was not a recording made, and no, there won't be another performance. However, I'm really thinking about peddling this thing around to other orchestras. Any ideas from anyone how a body goes about doing such a thing? All I have is a piano version, an orchestration on paper, and a whole bunch o' afficionados.

Hey Jim, Antheil just used airplane engines, so way to go with the whole plane fly-over thing. Also, I hear there's a good orchestra in Cupertino :P

No, seriously, that's too bad but also just cool to have a go at it. Sorry 'bout the wife. Ouch! Hope she heals up real good. An ex of mine took a metal sign to the bridge of her nose just as we started a big move (someone stuck it on top of a cabinet and it slid off). Bummer since she was strong! and had to sit it out at the ER.

Hey, congratulations, Jim... too bad the orchestra wasn't all that. You should definitely try again.
