Deck the Halls with Tunes- It's the Gift of Music 2006!

Post by Niveous »

'Tis the season for our yearly version of Secret Santa, it's:

Here's the concept:
Anyone who wants to be a part of this cover challenge simply needs to post here, telling me that they're in and listing 4 songs (links to the songs are appreciated). These 4 songs are 4 songs that you really like and would like to hear covered. Once the list of participants is compiled, the names will be tossed into a hat and paired off.

From there, each participant will get a private message telling them who they'll be giving the gift of music to as well as the 4 songs that person chose. The participant picks 1 song from the 4 and covers the song. Then on the due date, we post the results and everybody wins.

This year's Gift of Music comes with a twist! The song that you do must be a collaboration with someone you've never collaborated with before.

It's Secret Santa meets Coverfight meets Hxaro with incredible results. The previous 2 GoM's have been exceptional. Check them out on Eddiebangs' website Soul Tree Records:

2003 http://www.soultreerecords.com/GOM1.html
2004 http://soultreerecords.com/GOM/GOM2004.html
2005 http://soultreerecords.com/GOM/GOM2005.html

SONGS ARE DUE ON 1/17/07.

So if you want in to this year's Gift Of Music, post here within the next 3 weeks.

ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE GIVEN OUT ON THURSDAY AT 1PM EST. THE DEADLINE FOR INCLUSION IS THURSDAY AT 12PM.

Soul Tree Records will put up a $100 prize for the best entry. Votes will be collected and tracked via email only from those participating, and you cannot vote for your own entry or one you collaborated on.

I'm so excited about this. I'd been thinking of songs I wanted covered all year, and now I've forgotten them ALL. Anyway, big love.

Ooh, super! I was thinking quite recently that it ought to be about time for this. And an optional challenge that is not optional! Very clever. I'm all sorts of in, of course. Especially the kind of "in" where you submit songs and stuff.

I vote for a due date somewhere in early December. That way you can push it back a few weeks, and then push it back a few more weeks, and still not be too far into January.

Here are four songs that I spent all year planning for, and didn't just pick arbitrarily over my fifth drink this afternoon:

- Shoe In, by the Secret Stars
- Three Years Ago Today, by Built to Spill
- Heavy Weather, by MK Ultra
- Cure For Pain, by Morphine

I will eventually come up with some sort of links for whomsoever gets stuck with this list.

I'm in, and I would just like to add this:

If you aren't going to do it DON'T SIGN UP
If you aren't going to do it on time DON'T SIGN UP
If you are going to do a half-ass last-minute job because you were lazy or forgot DON'T SIGN UP
(this is just my personal opinion)

I'd also throw out there that I am available for collabs if anyone is interested. PM me.

GOM rocks. #4 is gonna be awesome

Ooh... I'm in. I'll sit and take a look at music when I've got a moment. The next few months are busy so having an excuse to sit down and work on songs will be awesome. :D

I'm also available for collabs as always.

F'neh, that collaboration requirement leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It tastes kind of like warm gin. I'll have to give a long think to it. Anyone that doesn't suck that I haven't worked with before that has an interest in collaborating with me, let me know.

What about huge group collabs like IRCAS? Do they count? Because even though, for example, Blue and I were in that together, we've never actually collabed directly with one another. And do the collabers need to be Songfighters?

I haven't miss this yet so I'm in. I remain available for collabs, but, I assume we don't really pick collaborators until we know the song we're doing...?

1) Don't pick collaborators until you pick a song (makes sense, right)

2) It must be a completely new collaboration. A songfighter is preferred but an outsider is fine too. (that way you can assimiliate them into SF. :) )

3) Of course, I'm in.

Yeah, I'll do it again even though the new collab thing is weird.
Will post songs later.

Yeah I am in, though the collaboration thing feels unneccessary and over-egging the pudding. But the rules is the rules, right?

Jumping on the bandwagon with the 'collab thing is wack'

Why not just leave that up to the artist? I think nur ein has affected you :)

Anyway, yeah, I'll be in this. My song list to follow.

Yeah - Niveous is the Songfight Rule Nazi!
But I'm definitley in - I love discipline. I hope we get punished if we are bad!

(oh...and if anyone wants a silent collaborator who will do absolutely nothing - I'm happy to help.)

(I could also do stuff if anyone wants too, I suppose)

I'll do this for sure. One of the most enjoyable sidefights of the year. Like BZL, I've been thinking about it since last time. But unlike BZL, I never really settled on a good list of four. Coming soon though.

Seriously, Eddie & I wanted to mix things up this year. And I figured collaborations would make it interesting because 1) it eliminates solo songs and 2) by making it a new collaboration, it broadens the community by either bringing in new people or creating new connections. Please, just give it a chance.

Never said it was a good thing, I said it made things interesting. Though some would contend that a lack of guytar songs would be a blessing.

Plus, this is about Xmas. It's all about rules and dogma, and little to do with lovin' life. Deal with it, folks.

I've had a typically Cashpoint-ian change of heart - count me out. Sorry to waste everyone's time / mess the thread up already.
