Music collaboration online

Here's a detailed description of how Gert wrote I Hate You, including audio samples and emails we exchanged as the idea evolved: http://www.hometracked.com/2006/11/28/o ... aboration/

Questions about remotely collaborating come up often enough that I thought this might be handy in the Help & How To. (And if you dug the tune, it's neat to hear it develop from TT's original idea which was completely different.)

Also related: an old thread on collabs.

I'm sure glad that you posted this deshead. I'm brand new to the whole online collaboration thing. My first one is this weeks dude and catastrophe entry and I've already been given some advice. I didn't even know that I could change the bpm on the mp3. So the more I read the kind of links you posted, the more I can learn to improve the quality of the final cut.
I have so much to learn about computer recording, music programs and such. I'm just a song writer/guitar player and I have tons of band experience, so that part is easy. But all of this computer studio stuff is over whelming.

Is that a stock Firepod photo, or is it yours?

That's sweet. It was probably frustrating to get going though at first though. I wish I could set up a page as well-put together for collabing as that. Cool stuff.

You can, though it's definitely better to agree on the BPM beforehand. Probably the first thing you should do, in fact.

It's mine. The dust on the knobs doesn't give it away?

We collaborate mostly using PhpBB, which is pretty easy to set up, especially if you're OK using a free hosting service. These guys (though there are scores of others) will do that for you, and it only takes 5 minutes.

Cool! Might have to set it up one of these days.
