For reference, NMG -> Not my Genre. This means I’m probably not the best person to review songs of these types.
Billy's Little Trip feat. Steve Durand
Song: I had a tough time understanding the lyrics and tie in to the title
Production: Some effects on the drums might bring them into the fold a little more
Performance: Excellent job there, Steve.
Overall: NMG, the best part of this for me was the brass.
Brandon Ellison
Song: I really like the song. A mix of things I really like that I first noticed listening to songwriters like David Bowie and Rufus Wainwright.
Production: Pretty good. The piano might be a touch hotter, but I like the effects on the various parts.
Performance: I like the sound of the piano. Unrehearsed in spots.
Overall: A nice job. I’m a huge fan of the harmonies and if these were tightened up this song would be in contention for me.
Cranial Biffida
Song: NMG
Production: very good
Performance: very good
Overall: NMG. The Egyptian feel is pretty nice in parts with the female voice singing, “come to me”
Emergency Pizza Party
Song: Actually.. good. Wow. Not often I like the rap songfight entries but this song is good.
Production: pretty well done
Performance: I liked some of the voices more than others, but overall some pretty good skills.
Overall: I love your artist name. Pretty entertaining. Good job.
Finding Nemoy
Song: glutton?
Production: sometimes the double voice is a little discordant.
Performance: there’s a little lisp here that makes this song cute
Overall: you know this is a nice little ditty. I don’t get how it ties in to the title but
Frankie Big Face
Song: great writing here: melody, moment, structure, purity, build and resolution.
Production: above and beyond
Performance: a very genuine sound
Overall: welcome back, frankie, great job. You missed a cymbal hit at one point in the song
The Gentlemen Thieves
Song: no hablo espanol
Production: the panned guitars are very nicely positioned. the main voice may be a touch too close
Performance: nicely done. The background vocals could be worked a little more
Overall: A fun little jig. My favorite part is just listening to the guitars and imagining a slightly better backing vocal section.
Glenn Case
Song: Fun with time signatures. Some 7/4, some 6/4. Great song.
Production: Excellent
Performance: Very tight (except for just at the end there) which can be difficult to do with these sigs.
Overall: Wonderful. I like your stuff more and more Glenn...
J.R. Stinkenstein
Song: NMG. Pretty good.
Production: Good job mixing.
Performance: Really loose in parts, if this was a little tighter this could be a nice fun song even though not typically my cup of coffee. Nice slide guitar in parts.
Overall: Yehaw. This is a good start.
Jim Tyrrell
Song: I like the melody to this.
Production: A little too thick and muddy in parts. Gorgeous effect on the snare.
Performance: Nice job with the singing
Overall: Good job.
Jolly Roger
Song: NMG
Production: voice needs to be handled differently in the mix to fit a little better
Performance: great drumming,
Overall: NMG but the drumming is really nice in this.
Melvin
Song: Sounds a bit like 311 meets Christian rock, although I can’t catch all of the lyrics so I’m not sure exactly what you’re going for.
Production: nicely done. Vocals didn’t sounds quite right in the mix
Performance: nicely done.
Overall: This is a bit different from the other stuff of yours I’ve listened to. The first song I heard was Brimming With Tears, which I love. I like that style a little more than this (I’m not a huge 311 fan), although this song is tighter and better performed.
Octothorpe
Song: Written and recorded in about the time it took Lenscrafters to make my glasses.
Production: Recorded in an empty warehouse in sub-zero temperatures
Performance: Ug. Feel free to ding the guitar work.
Overall: I had a blast hanging out and recording this song. For better or worse this song will always remind me of my first Seattle snowstorm.
PiGPEN
Song: the lyrics are actually not too bad in parts. Some pretty genuine honesty and vulnerability going on here unless I’m misreading
Production: voice is too hidden by the stuff above it.
Performance: voice is a little raw but could work with this type of song
Overall: this song could be pretty genuine if there was a little less musical kitsch hanging out above it. Let the lyrics guide the accompaniment a bit more and this could be the first song of yours that I liked.
Rain Down Hell
Song: the ..noise.. is … killing.. me..
Production: NMG
Performance: NMG
Overall: NMG
Ratt Poizon
Song: NMG
Production: Actually some darn fine production in spots
Performance: Good
Overall: NMG. I actually really don’t like this style, but I give you an A for execution
Scrap Heap
Song: An obsessive compulsive person with a microphone
Production: ok
Performance: not a fan of the musical choices here, really.
Overall: This is not very entertaining to listen to, really.
Stylon Pilson
Song: pretty decent song here
Production: voice is nice but doesn’t fit quite in the mix right
Performance: great job here with the drums, voice and guitar
Overall: good job
Thanks for the Frisbee
Song: cute
Production: ok
Performance: the strummy guitar sounds like it needs a bit of a tune up, and some of the harmonies are a bit off
Overall: Not a bad song, I think if this was a little tighter and I could dig this.
Wages of Sin
Song: Not too bad.
Production: voice too murky, not the greatest production overall. Some sounds are too clean and others too murky.
Performance: A little loose in spots
Overall: NMG but I still listened to the whole thing. Not too bad.
Wormsweater – I couldn’t load this song…
Song:
Production:
Performance:
Overall:
WreckdoM
Song: Funny
Production: Eh, so-so.
Performance: Spectacular voice on this. “Double fudge surprise” killed me.
Overall: Funny.
Yes Yes No Yes???
Song: True, all I do is eat, eat, eat.
Production: No
Performance: No
Overall: Eh, not spectacular I must say.
ZeaLous1 feat. DarkHeart
Song: The sample doesn’t mesh perfectly with the lyrics and there’s not much variation from start to finish, but overall the lyrics are pretty good.
Production: Nice organ sample
Performance: Good rapping skills
Overall: Pretty good, try changing things up
Zipline
Song: NMG
Production: Serious clipping going on here
Performance: A little loose in spots, not a huge fan of this voice
Overall: NMG
