Sgt. Pepper Fight?

On June 2, it will be the 40th Anniversary of the release of the Beatles super-album, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band. So I think we should arrange some sort of Sgt. Pepper's related side fight. There are a few ways we could do this, each with it's advantages and disadvantages:

1) Album Fight: Since we have several months until this anniversary is upon us, each contestant will have time to cover the ENTIRE ALBUM. Collabs would be a-okay.
Advantages: It's ambitious, and likely rewarding
Disadvantages: Would enough people do it?

2) Whatever Song You Want: With this method you just pick a song from the album to cover, and people vote on which one they like the best.
Advantages: It's would be easy for people to enter. They could do whatever song they wanted.
Disadvantages: We might end up with 10 people doing only Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds

3) Dibs: First person to claim a song gets to cover the song, until all 13 songs are chosen. People vote on best entry.
Advantages: We will collectively have a complete album. No repeats.
Disadvantages: Somebody far more qualified to do a particular song may not get a chance simply because they weren't quick enough to call dibs. Would enough people join?

So what are the thoughts of the SongFight community? Is there interest in this at all? If so, which method would be best? I'm leaning towards either option 1 or 3. We have plenty of time to decide.

PEACE!

That's a cool idea. I personally don't think choice 1 would work for the majority of people, but a few people may finish. Choice 2 and three aren't bad. For some reason I was going to call dibs on Octopus's Garden, but then I was like, 'hey! that's Abbey Road.' I think 'Getting Better' would be a good one for me, with the references to school. Anyone else want to do this?

Hummmm six months to go? Too EARLY, perchance?

Covering the whole album is a really great idea and I am doing it regardless of what fight is built up around this idea.

While it has been done before, I was thinking the very same thing.

ROCK!

Yes, because you should do the entire album three days before the deadline thus assuring it's pure awesomeness by illustrating skill, technique, and utter perfection. *muah*

*smiley*

Personally, I think this is a terrible idea.

Hmmm...I actually know Steve Martin. I wonder if I could get him to do vocals on "Maxwells Silver Hammer?"
Is George Burns still alive?

That's funny Justin, Steve Martin hitting things on an assembly lin is the first thing that came to mind when I saw this thread. I'm pretty sure I've only seen the Sgt Pepper movie once, but that's what I remember.

edit: Oh, and Peter Frampton was Billy Sheers (sp)....I think

Sure, except Maxwell's Silver Hammer isn't on Sgt. Pepper's...

Why can't it be Abbey Road's anniversary? Not that I don't love Sgt. Pepper's, but I just have a special spot in my heart for 'Octopus's Garden'. It's probably my top favorite song of all time.

But more importantly it was IN Sgt Peppers.

True. Might I suggest putting off this tribute until the 40th anniversary of the movie? ;)

(11 years and counting...)

I would suggest multiple whole album entries which could be completed individually or as collaborations where multiple songfighters contributed 1 more tracks. Votes could be in multiple categories, for best individual song, and for best complete album, etc. I personally would take "she's leaving home", or "within you, without you". maybe "day in a life." anyway thats my suggestion. i think this is actually a cool idea, and organzing it a couple months out gives ample time for to work on tunes, hammer out details, etc.

The Big Daddy album is amazing - especially the finale - poignant cover[of the song] - great album!

Sure, it might be a bad idea, but has that ever stopped me in the past?

;)

It's a shame that you both think it's such a bad thing, because I would love to hear the interpretations that each of you could come up with for some of the songs on that album. Particularly the way I envision Hoblit tearing it up for "Lovely Rita", and Frankie taking on "Good Morning, Good Morning"

Furthermore...I do what I WANT!

.....MUTHAS!

(I claim "She's Leaving Home" if option 3 becomes the way this goes.)

ROCK!

would it be wierd to make our own "Songfights! Lonely Hearts Club Band". I mean as a collective. Everybody work together on all the tracks... Giving out parts through lottery or by just who wants to be involved. Say i do drums on one track then sing on another... then throw in random rhythm guitar on another (all the while other songfighters are contributing thier parts to the songs too)... and in the end everybody has contributed in some way to the overall album. Like a worldwide collaboration to cover this album.

I think that's a bit too big in scope for us to accomplish in an organized manner. But it could be a fun challenge.

or the other idea i had...

Get as many people as we can involved and then seperate them into teams at random to work on covering individual songs as a team...

like we get 20 people to sign up. (I know a bit too large of a number..) We seperate those into 5 groups of 4 each and assign each group (or they could choose by some other strange method i am yet to come up with) two or three songs on thw album. and in the end, everybody participates and we have an interesting full songfight collaboration cover of Sgt. Peppers.

Just an idea... feel free to tear it apart if its not good.

thanks and gig' em

I would collab on some cover from this great album, but I'd rather not go it alone.
