... of course, the real trick is to avoid
ones that have already been used.

I am thrilled to see the titles this week. I know I have to find time to make a song happen for one of them. The hard part will be which one to choose.
ROCK!

I dig the old school titles. Very nice.

I don't understand what exactly is challenging about the optional challenge. Isn't that just a matter of which options you select when you encode? I don't get it.

i could be wrong but i think it has to do with the "original" file limits for submission. and to maybe discourage josh woodward from entering.

There is somewhat of a technique to making a song that sounds good in mono 64kbps. One part of it is a reversal of the standard monitoring philosophy-- instead of trying to make a mix that sounds good on any system, you have to be conscious that you're making a mix that specifically sounds good in mono at a fairly low compression rate. (Plus somewhat thinking about it in terms of all the systems it will be played on.)

Ah, so that's what 'old school' means. It means 'old'.

Avoid bright sounds. Minimise white noise like snare drums, hihats, skakers and tape hiss which 'hog' the bandwidth. If you're using distorted guitars, aim for the Black Sabbath sound. If you're using synths, avoid sawtooth or square based sounds - use sine and PWM.

So, is this, like some sort of subtle reference to Veterans Day (which we just had here in the U.S.)???

Man, when I first got here, ABCD Puppies was being voted on, and Zero to Phantom was in the open-invitation phase. I couldn't think of a song for Zero to Phantom then. And four years later, I still can't.

"Zero to Phantom. This is Zero calling Phantom. Come in Phantom."

Yeah, OK. I can see that now. Mixing something knowing it's going to be loo-fi and mono could change one's decision-making process. OK. Glad I asked.
I'm with you, fluffy. I had promised myself I was going to submit this week no matter what, even if (though) all I'd be able to manage was a
1:08 solo guy and piano song. Then when the titles came out I had nothing.

Well, my point was just that I've had four years to think about this title (and I actually have, on and off), and I still got nothing.

I don't have a good idea for it yet, but if I don't do ABCD Puppies I must be some sort of failure as a real-time songwriter. It'll be hard to top Nil's version though.
edit: btw - abcd puppies? lmno puppies! smr puppies, cmp?
