Some General Thoughts About Sidefights

Hey All,
I just wanted to start a new thread rather than respond to Obs/Niv in the GOM thread.
I've always thought problem with sidefights was finding someone to organize them, but lately it seems a lack of participation. Lots of ideas, lots of calls to action, very little return. (That longfight comes to mind where people wanted months to write a song and 3 people did.) I'm not sure if people are burnt out or what. I have been pretty late with my entries and will probably not sign up for things for a while. At least until I've put some energy into regular Songfights first.
Anyone else want to say anything about Sidefights and their place in the Songfight community can do it here and leave the GOM thread alone.
Be well,
Ken

Well, for me, it's pretty much all about us writing original songs, so all these coverfights based on covering "published" artists really haven't interested me. I also have some question about copyright issues for such fights, though I'm sure I'm as guilty as anybody here of making mp3's from CDs I check out of the library... and I'm not calling anybody out about that, just saying it's an issue for me.
I would possibly / probably be interested in a fight covering other songfight artists' songs. I skipped the last coverfight because I thought the setup (the lists) was more work than the payoff (one cover) was worth to me. (And I haven't brought it up once since then, except this time because you asked). I also wish that the Real Secret Santa would make a return and organize a few more lovefests.
Also - and I know this has been proposed and shot down - the fact that sidefights are self-hosted means that a lot of the stuff disappears in a few months. If songfight! was willing to host "official" coverfights, I might be more interested (and, yes, I do have the ability to host my own stuff, but it's limited and tends to be on a rotating basis... most of my hxaro songs are now offline). I accept that they choose not to do that, but it's one of the reasons that coverfights are of less interest to me.

there does seem to be an influx of sidefights of late. i mean, i remember, back in the day when we were lucky to get three or four a year. And I had to walk 4 miles barefoot throught the snow to get to them!
I must admit though, i don't often get the time to enter into SongFight proper, and the Sidefights are a nice way for me to continue to participate in the community.
So i would say overexposure as well as burnout may be the culprit in the Sidefight fiasco of late.

I've found that the only sidefight that really motivated me was when I covered 15-16 puzzle's song. The rest don't make me commit to anything. During AADs and my attempted FAWM, it's tough to write original material. So, yes Ken. I feel burnt out by sidefights.

I have opinions (obviously, as I have opinions about everything) but stating them hasn't ever done my rep much good. Which kind of goes for sidefights.
Like Nur Ein. Everyone involved seemed to love it. No real rhyme or reason to it. Indeed slightly more complicated than most, one could argue. organised like others, just seemed to gel Other sidefights, which, like my opinions, seemed to sound sound, fell apart very quickly.
I guess I don't think you can legislate for it. Logically the Presidents vs Residents sidefight shouldn't have had a better pick-up than the Abba sidefight, but it did ...

And you only have 571. Which makes my p*nis bigger, i believe
Actually if you include the 1471 I managed on drumbella (which I do, but no-one else does) I should be pushing 5,000.
Bow down to my posty nonsense.

I still say that weird cloud protuberance looks like a penis. A lumpy, misshapen penis, but a penis no less.

Hey - are you censoring the terms for the male sex organ yourself, or is that happening automatically because the moderators have installed some sort of kn*b scrubbing software which will clean up terms like p*rple-helmeted l*ve warrior, blue-veined junket pump*r and Dick Chen*y?

JB (and his 50-incher) would probably be the LAST guy who would ever want dick euphemisms censored.

BTW - I was (am) a Nur Ein! lover. If it comes up again I am IN!! (unless the timing bites, like if it happens in the summer when I'm out of town [hint hint niv]).
Seems to me like there could always be sidefights if people were into it. I think that folks just need to be more realistic about their commitments. In each of the last two reciprocal fights there were people who never got their song and the Uke fight - lots of people showed interest and (although a commitment was never asked for) only five entered. If the interest level was more realistically represented, more of them wouldn't happen, and/or more participants wouldn't be dissapointed.
my two cents

Man. This has got to be the gayest thread on songfight in like... a week.
At least five days.
And not a hipcola in sight... odd.
IRA.
Nur Ein rocked. I thought it was pretty damn fun, and motivating. Sidefights... some will jive with me, some won't. Some seem like a total retarded whim (more than less) while some .... are just better ideas from my perspective.
Hey look, my T*llyw*cker is bigger than Sven's, AND he's from Alberta. Isn't that where all the Wendy's hot beef comes from??

For me it's the follow through that's been lacking. "Yacht Rock" sidefight, did that. There was supposed to be a voting and reviews page setup and it never happened. It produced some pretty good stuff, but no particular place to access it all. You had to scan the multiple pages of the thread to find all of the songs.
Then there was the "Total Request Coverfight", which BTW Ken the originator of this thread, as I might wrongly recall (I'm not going back to check), never followed through on his promise to create a page for voting and reviews.
EDIT: There is in fact a page for this now, located here.
http://www.songfight.net/coverfight/cover.php I stand corrected and humbled by my mistake and apologize publicly to Ken & JB for my erroneous remarks.
The Hall and Oates sidefight which was a sidefight built off of the Yacht Rock sidefight, never happened at all. My song was done but no one ever posted in the thread for like a month before it was due. So I, like many others presumably, just thought the idea died.
My point is FOLLOW THROUGH folks. If you're going to try and organize one of these things, do it. Front to back, do it. Niveous put together the best sidefight ever with the "Nur Ein". Why? Because he followed through. Although there was no chance I could have participated, I enjoyed the songs that were produced tremendously. And I could easily access the song and review pages. It was a well thought out and well executed sidefight.
I love the extended time that a sidefight provides. It's no secret that I have trouble meeting the one week deadline. But give me a month, or two, or three and I just might make a pretty
decent song.

Sidefights, by their nature, are for those who desire to go beyond the weekly competitions. This excludes those who can't be arsed to dig up some free server space.
