Staggered titles

Blasphemy coming:
I would like to see two titles going at once with staggered assignment weeks, and a two week due date for each.
That gives more time for reviews and composition, but still one fight per week (no more no less).
I just got something really nice for Grey Rainbow but unfortunately it's due tomorrow and I can't devote enough time to make it nice. But if I had another week...
Thoughts on this?

Micro, this is the first suggestion about multiple titles that actually makes sense and that I actually like. You sir must be a scientist of molecular rocketry.

no - I don't like it. A week is a good time to make a song in. I'd lose interest over 2 weeks. The side fights are always a good example of what long deadlines do - everyone says "yeah" at first - then hardly anyone ever finishes.
I'd like to see more "Longfights!" come in as a semi-ongoing thing, run as self-hosted side fights (like "The Jig Is Up", that JoS organised a few years ago) - these could be held over 2 or 4 weeks - but I think the 1 week time limit for the official fights is the perfect length

Nothing keeps you from writing a song called Grey Rainbow outside the fight time and posting it on Somesongs. I've got a great VW just waiting for production. And waiting. And waiting.
Either you're inspired and have time or not. What if... Baseball had 10 innings. Or football 5 quarters. Or women's tennis 3 sets.
Blasphemy indeed.

I just got an idea for Gray Rainbow as well. Obviously, it's not gonna make it.
But personally, if you gave me two weeks, it'd give me longer to be uninspired, or generally procrastinate.
That said, I'll finish mine and post it on Somesongs, and I hope you do the same.

Fights used to be two weeks when I started songfight. It gave me a week to write the songs and a week to arrange/record it. I really enjoyed that.

This is just another excuse for procrastination. People will just get lazy.

Or maybe the people with short attention spans will get bored and go away.

You young kids and your lazy ways. All I need is one hour to write, three hours to record, and two days to fight with my computey-majigger to deliver my empathy record to your web store.

laughing my ass off at the ken/blue/roymond exchange there. wonderful.
As candy for the hardworking fightmasters, having a two week due date might relieve some of the constant nagging about title/song posting delays. Just a thought...
For the record I do see the purity of the timed system. The time challenge and the weekly voting and reviews are what has compeled me to submit 25 songs since August 2003, and while I have submitted songs to somesongs (I even did a radio spot for it), it doesn't compel me to write much...

If you get an idea too late to submit, no one's stopping you from recording anyway. Not every song you ever write (even to a songfight title) has to enter a songfight.

Well, I still like the idea of a new title every week to 10 days just the way it is now, but staggered to give two weeks to finish each, like Micro suggested.
But I've been getting used to the time frame we have now. I need a little discipline in my life anyway.
But I can't help thinking about what someone said in another thread about quantity over quality.
A. Does Song Fight want to be known for how fast an artist(s) can put out a song from the chosen title?
B. Does Song Fight want to be know for awesome music being created and produced from a chosen title?

Well, yeah, that's pretty self-evident. But my suggestion is meant to enhance the songfight experience in particular.
The whole value of songfight is the time limit and without it I won't write as much. If the song isn't done I won't find a reason to finish it. So I'm just saying that, for me, the deadline isn't tuned correctly.
'1 week' is just as arbitrary as 'two weeks' or 'an album-a-day'. I'm just saying that the whole songfight experience would be better for me if I had a little more time and I'm wondering how many other people agree.
In the long time I've been listening (since 2000) there has not been a consistent deadline, so it's not like 1 week has some divine purity. What's a little calibration in the interest of several improvements:
- more time for reviews
- better song quality
- more satisfaction with the whole experience
- slightly less pressure on fightmasters to post songs/titles early
