I'm guessing that the optional challenge has somethig to do with YouTube. Wish I had a digital camcorder. A Canon A550 camera video probably won't cut it. Anyway, I'm going for it.

See, you thought you had a chance; I put my hand in, but I had *nothing*. No ideas, no direction, no hook, no lyrics, no beats. Nothing.

That all changed while dropping off my aunt-in-law and mother-in-law off at the Ramada this evening. I have my chorus, I have my hook, and I have my beats -- and a solid direction for the rest. Those with rumps to shake and systems to boom will most definitely need to apply.

I am going to own this fight, or humiliate myself trying. In a way, I think I'll be happy with either result.

(I don't usually trash-talk, but I don't usually write Dance-pop, either. I feel like they go hand-in-hand.)

The Big Dumb Jerks will be bringing the heat. And get this:

The song is actually serious! ...mostly.
I am definitely too square for how experimental this is, but I can imagine that if I was in the right state of mind, the section starting at 2:20 might transport me to another dimension - jeffhenderson

I think this challenge is awesome, but Sober has a point here: Most dance songs are over 5 minutes long, and have the bass drum thumping on *every* beat. If we get 40 entries again, and all meet this typical criteria, that will only be 3 and a half hours of music, or > 25,000 bass drum thumps to listen to and review.

Sugar Shaker length

Post by MC Eric B »

My Sugar Shaker song is 1 minute and 58 seconds. I tried to keep it short and sweet. Nobody wants to hear me sing for 5 minutes. :)

I think the case has been made quite effectively here that people should be submitting somewhat shortened versions, and saving the "extended mix" versions for whatever circle of hell is reserved for techno musicians...

kidding, kidding, don't come out of the woodwork...

IN.

My song is.. a little bit like a maybe... the macarena!

That is, if the macarena involved the ra(s)p of a horny 80 year old man over riffs in the diminished scale.

we, the group "i.p." is proud to make this our first songfight entry.

I guess it's not very rookie-like of us to guarantee a great song on our first attempt... but I'm pretty sure we can guarantee a great song, so we will.

The band will be somewhat amorphous, mostly consisting of James Bean, Lex Butera-Smith and Ivan Becker-Wayman, but who knows who will show up on any given song.

Just thought I'd say that I don't see any reason for "strong, danceable rhythm" to be taken as "everyone make a techno/pop song"

I may pull out some funkabilly to prove this point.

I totally agree.

Eugene Oregon funk-hop, Sober. I don't know Texas well enough to explain what that means with comparative geography oriented stereotypes.

Hope you kids a) don't suck; b) have thick skins; and c) don't suck.

Polkas are dancable too. And *short*.

Hah! I think you just need to link to some images of the Oregon Country Fair
(No offense kids -- I'm sure you'll rock. Heh.)

The OCF is amazing.
Don't dis.

As far as applying genre's to songs, I suck.
Funk-Hop doesn't mean "Bum chicka BOW WOW" which is immediately what I think of when I think "funk-hop," so if I can't even give my own song a genre name that makes sense to me, then why should I be trying?

If you don't like what we do, that's obviously our fault, but "that's your fault."
If you don't like oregon, that's your fault :P

I may be backing out. Hopefully I'm just having a bad night, but I have a sneaky suspicion that two years of raising kids (and a bit longer than that playing cheesy uke/piano songs) has killed my ability to write a pop song. That, or I'm just getting old. Damn kids. One more try tomorrow, and if it doesn't gel, I'll pull the plug and leave it to the young'ns.

I agree with this statement. I want to do something awesome, but I don't have the resources. Maybe I could make it in Garageband, but it would sound REALLY shitty.
