FIGHT #7 (1/14/01 - 1/12/01)
Zero to Phantom
RATINGS SYSTEM IS FROM 1 to 10
1 being poor and 10 being excellent
LINK TO ORIGINAL REVIEW THREAD: There does not appear to be an original review thread for this song.
NOTE: The opinions expressed by Glenn Case are not necessarily the views of anyone.
-----------------------------------------------
Amber Waves of Brain: I can't tell you if were really trying to submit a song, or annoy listeners. This is nearly painful to listen to. While the production isn't awful, I think everything else about this song is.
2 of 10.
ARTIST I HEAR COVERING IT: Depeche Mode... slowed down... and played backwards
----------------------------------------------
Chili Magnets: The music sounds very lo-fi, but not badly out of tune or anything. I think there are competent musicians working on this song, but it seems like it was meant as an inside joke, maybe. It is almost entertaining.
3 out of 10.
ARTIST I HEAR COVERING IT: King Missile
----------------------------------------------
Drew: Let me just say... NO ONE ELSE HAD A CHANCE IN THIS FIGHT! The production of this song is top notch, the lyrics and overall song are fun, and it makes me bounce around in my chair like a maniac. This is a song that I can listen to over and over again without getting sick of it. This is one of my favorite songfight songs I have ever heard, and the first time that I have given out a perfect 10 rating.
10 out of 10.
ARTIST I HEAR COVERING IT: Apache Indian (still)
-----------------------------------------------
Gil Sans & Jonathan: Nice blending of organ sounds with guitar. There is nothing wrong with the production, but the song is also not providing anything exciting or interesting for me either. The use of 2 words throughout the song might be a songfight record (Least amount of different words in a non-instrumental) but it also feels like you couldn't think of anything better, so you decided to be lazy.
5 out of 10
ARTIST I HEAR COVERING IT: Mazzy Star
-----------------------------------------------
Kompressor As the intro to the song starts, I find myself bobbing back and forth to the beat. It is interesting that Drew sounds more like Kompressor than Kompressor sounds like Kompressor through most of this particular song (if that makes sense). Cool groove to the song, not excellent... but certainly not bad.
6 out of 10
ARTIST I HEAR COVERING IT: The L.A. Dream Team
-----------------------------------------------
MC Short Bus I like the piano sound and the beat... The delivery of the rhymes sound uninspired. It's funny, because I can actually imagine another rapper with a better delivery making this sound ok. As it sits, it needs a lot of work. The first place I personally would have worked on is your flow, but the clarity of the whole production would not be far behind in needing some help.
4 out of 10
ARTIST I HEAR COVERING IT: Dr. Octagon
-----------------------------------------------
Metalmags It is cute. Lo-fi seems to be the style of this fight. Maybe that was just songfight's way back then (Some would argue that this never changed, I am sure.) I can appreciate this one time through, but it isn't something that I would probably want to listen to much more than once.
5 out of 10
ARTIST I HEAR COVERING IT: Sifl and Olly
-----------------------------------------------
Narbotic The vocals sound out of key to me. Maybe you are trying to make me fall asleep....you are succeeding. The hook of the song tends to annoy me more than it captures my attention. Maybe there is a whole group of people who can get behind songs like these and enjoy them, I am just not one of those people.
3 out of 10
ARTIST I HEAR COVERING IT: Jethro Tull at a campfire
-----------------------------------------------
Prickly Pears Now I am almost positive that you were just trying to piss people off by submitting this song. The guitar playing is incredibly sloppy which is not good since that the only instrument in the recording. It is like you took a cheap tape recorder and set it in a room and pressed record while randomly playing things. You can scream ok, and there are times when that works in a song. THAT is the only reason this doesn't get a 1 out of 10.
2 out of 10
ARTIST I HEAR COVERING IT: Pixies Wanna-bes
-----------------------------------------------
THE ARTIST WHO WON FIGHT #7: Drew
I WOULD'VE VOTED FOR: Drew

something constructive to do while waiting.
amber waves of brain
starts slow but i like it more as it goes along. the singing isn't real good.
chili magnets
kind of cool in a weeny sort of way. nice length to not aggravate me.
drew
it's like tom waits replaced brad in sublime. clever and well done.
gil sans & jonathan
i think i'd enjoy it more without tsunami-like reverb. listening to this makes em feel like this tune was hampered by the 64k mono limit. well done.
kompressor
makes me want to bust out some men without hats. my song this week is sort of a kompressor tribute. sorry.
MC short bus
i've heard much worse rap in recent memory on songfight. pretty good, and limited by the 64k.
metalmags
cute, quirky, and well done. not my thing for the most part, but it's well produced and arranged. and good singing too.
narbotic
it's like i'm reviewing Adam. not bad, crappy production is sort of endearing.
prickly pears
haha. you brought the one missing element to this fight. it's early jute gyte!
this was a pretty good fight, even by today's standards. it would be cool to post this fight alongside the new one. i'm glad i went and checked it out.
i would have voted prickly pears.

I would have voted for Kompressor without a doubt. Kompressor = god.
IMO, 65 KPS and over, or any form of stereo, in this fight = corporate rock-whore sellout. You might as well give up now and go protest about third world debt with Bono & Stipey and all those other carers ...
Now I have had my taste of 64k mono, I might never go back. It's so ... moorish!

yeah, both titles this week were dups of two past fights...many a year ago.Humbert wrote:where are you getting these songs from? i still see last week's DAD songs for the blue fight, although the new red fight songs are up.
Some folks have been entertaining themselves reviewing these past songs from yesteryear for the benefit of... themselves? us?

Hey, I had to find it in the old boards and cut and paste my reviews. That took a couple of minutes!tviyh wrote:except for mister "reviewing the archive" case who didn't even need any actual effort to review the fight before posting here... 8)
The interesting side effects of old reviews took place in the ABCD Puppies fight, as you know. I evidentally reviewed ABCD Puppies before Frontalittle made "Happy Machine Ankle"
And, of course, the sample from "Merry Christmas" came from THIS fight! How odd is that?! Two old titles, and both of them had songs within the fight that FAL sampled later.
ROCK!

It's a shame though...
I have made a wonderful batch of creamed corn
an equally heavenly batch of sweet potatoes
and even did a last minute sweet potato rice pudding

OMG The Befores just gave me an eargasm. Are you guys secretly an American version of Faye Wong?
Jesus crap this is a good fight. I like The Befores, Deshead, and Gil Sans, and that's only from the ones I've listened to, which isn't that many of them. drew is also still good, though not the top pick this time around. (I think I voted for Gil Sans last time, FWIW.)

review
Since no one else seems to be around, i'll give the first reviews.....I will not include the songs from the previous fight, this should be new material. here goes
1.AMPERSAND--This one has a good feel to it, i'm really digging the harmonica....nice. Possible vote.
2. BEFORES--This one is tight without a doubt....it's got a Sneaker Pimps kind of thing going on.....very nice. Another possible vote.
3. CREEP-- NO COMMENT, this ones mine.
4. DESHEAD--DAMN, another good one.....this fight is going to be tough. I voted for DESHEAD last week and I might have to do it again.
5. FREDDIE LOVE-- OH GOD, This is a stupid good fight, THIS ONE IS GOOD TOO! I'm all over the place here, who the hell do I vote for? I feel like this one might be the catchiest so far.....what to do.
6.FUTURE BOY-- This one is pretty good too....funny ass lyrics about cheese or something. That keyboard is insane...good work.
7. HOSTESSMOSTESS-- I like this one too..but nothing really sticks out, except the bassline....nice work though.
8. IRONCLEF-- This one is cool with the 64K MONO thing, but it is really not a structured song, so i'll pass.
9. JOHNNYCASHPOINT-- This has it's merits, but it kind of pales to the competition this week.
10. JOSH WOODWARD-- There is no doubt that the production on this one blows the others away so far. It is good, but i'm just not feeling it like the others.
11. KELVINATOR-- Damn son, this one rocks. I don't know, I'm tied up. The guitar could have been tighter, but this one sticks in my head like freakin peanut butter. Stay tuned
12. KENSSUPER-- As Grady on SANFORD AND SON would say, GOOD GOOBITY GOOB.....another great one. This is ridiculous...too many GREAT SONGS...and I do mean GREAT. This one is right up there....damn.
13. MODKCREW--Naahhhh, not this week..not even close.
14. NIPPLECREEK-- Musically, I can't deny it, this is the most elaborate of the week, and it's catchy too....just not catchy enough to beat out my favorite, great job nonetheless
15. POORJUNE-- This one must have been in the 64 optional challenge...it just doesn't do it for me guys.....sorry.
16. TRIPPED-- I'm diggin on this one, kind of reminds me of mine....but I feel it is not enough this week, I'm feeling the same way about mine too, so don't take it personally.
After much thought and struggle I have to go with KENSSUPER....but damn, it was tough. If everyone keeps this up, we will all improve. Hats off to everyone this week for an incredible fight.....i'm exhausted.

yeah....
my bad...I spent an hour listening to the songs, i was never good at english. And Johnny, don't get offended at my choices, yours was good too, I just had to shorten my comments because of time. I wish i had time to give good, long, descriptive comments but this week was just too much. I go with my gut mainly...that's what music should be. I'm out.
