I've never been walking in Memphis
Kept my feet firmly on the ground
I've don't believe that you've seen Elvis
Been a long time since that guy was around
I don't care if he was the king
He may have been some kind of hero
To the disaffected teenage crowd
And yeah he helped them find a voice
He helped shape today's common sound
So I thank God for Memphis
Tennessee way
And I'll believe in Elvis
For maybe one day
He may have been some kind of villain
To the downtrodden negro man
Stealing the music that nobody heard
But arguably thanks to him we can
So I thank God for Memphis
Tennessee way
And I'll believe in Elvis
For maybe one day

===========================
When I was a boy
I ran all over this town
there was a fire in my eyes
nothing could slow me down
In the Mississippi River
on those hot summer days
I let the beauty of the South
wash all my cares away
Barbeques, picnics
and hot apple pies
going to the church on Sundays
where I was baptized
Looking down the highway
towards the future unknown
felt safe in the arms of a city
that I called home
Chorus
===========================
Under the moon and stars
where I had my first kiss
a special place in my heart
Thank God for Memphis
===========================
I felt like a king
walking in blue suede shoes
at home in the birthplace
of the rhythm and blues
The sounds of Elvis
kept my spirit alive
making my feet and my hips
want to dance, jump and jive
I often think about those days
when I'm sad or feeling down
lost in the memories
take me back to my hometown
Chorus
===========================
Under the moon and stars
where I had my first kiss
a special place in my heart
Thank God for Memphis
Thank God for Memphis

Thank God for Memphis - by Mc Wino feat. Catooooooole
give it up, you cant win
your gold eyes your gold skin
fear whats small, this buzzing desiese
dont go outside, dont fall asleep
thank yourselfs you really did it this time
dig your grave, you really did it this time
this chronic heat, your sweating blood
flies circle but, these knats flood
a city emptied, run for you life
burn it all down, ash into the ground
thank yourselfs you really did it this time
dig your grave, you really did it this time
thank god, thank god, thank god... burn it to the ground
thank god, thank god, thank god... for another burning town
thank god, thank god, thank god... a city plagued by ignorance
thank god, thank god, thank god... choke on your own vomit

I don't rap, but in light of the slavery-angle I used for this song, it seemed (in)appropriate. Also I stole the idea of "Thank God" from when Anne Rice tore some amazon.com reviewers up for talking shit...she found God and stopped writing vampire books, and said something like 'Yes, The Vampire Chronicles are over. Thank God!', like a 'blame God' thing...
(just wanted to make completely sure no one took this song as racist)
Thank God for Memphis:
White man’s burden on the back of a Black Sisyphus
Black gold stolen by hillbilly colonists
We put them to work like Protestants
Black's culture turned into a Christian's
So you can thank God for Memphis
Blame God for Memphis
President Polk came from Tennessee
Dragging slaves and manifest destiny
See missionaries head over like they own the place
Speaking in some tongues that no one speaks
We forgot that part about ‘do unto others’
To keep our labour cheap when we built our altars
You can...
You can thank God for Memphis
Blame God for Memphis

Well, now, the sign on the side of my truck says "Swift,"
But that's just the company name;
I'm a maker of bad decisions, and I've got
Only myself to blame.
I got a wife in Little Rock who's one of the bad ones,
And usually mad at me
That's why wherever I go I always wind up making
A side trip to Tennessee.
Thank God for Memphis
And the girl who's waiting there.
Thank God for Memphis
Tight blue jeans and long blonde hair.
Eighteen wheels on the interstate
Just out of Nashville and I can't wait
The road I ride ain't exactly straight -
Thank God for Memphis.
I'm so sick of listening to Elvis songs
But Elvis is my reason to drive.
My explanation for all those stops along
I-55.
And if a man's gonna go to Graceland,
Well then a man needs a place to sleep.
I got a glove box full of spare souvenirs
And my own little secret to keep.
(chorus)
How could I resist a girl so sweet?
You know you'd be just like me
If you were sitting in my seat.
(instrumental)
(chorus 2x)

Thank God For Memphis by Melvin
Well I went down to Georgia
To see a good friend of mine
We got stoned and drunk
Then he shanked me in the thigh
Well that’s all right
That’s all right
Took a train down to Kentucky
To work on Johnson’s farm
Dang if that ol’ combine
Done tore off my left arm
But that’s all right
That’s all right
Cause when I get back home to Memphis I’m all right
Well I went down to Texas
To see an old gal of mine
We was gonna dance all night
But she went home with another guy
Well that’s all right
That’s all right
Caught a ride to Louisiana
To camp up in the hills
One night I heard a howlin’ wolf
Then I came down with the chills
But that’s all right
That’s all right
Cause when I get back home to Memphis I’m all right
Thank God for the town of Memphis, I’m all right

When I get to Memphis
It won't be no vacation
Tearing shit to pieces
In a sticky situation
Heads are gonna roll
When I lose all self control
Manipulated twistin' like a
Stripper on a pole
In Memphis
Memphis, Tennessee
In Memphis
Memphis, Tennessee
Sick in the drunk tank
Living off cockroaches
Sawing off my toes with a
Mutilated toothbrush
Have you been to Memphis?
Have you tasted foreign blood?
Then put on this flashy jumpsuit
and take off the kiddie gloves
In Memphis
Memphis, Tennessee
In Memphis
Memphis, Tennessee

Thank God For Memphis
By Steve Durand
In ancient Egypt on the Nile
A gracious city stood
Centerpiece for government,
The sciences, and arts
Alabaster statues
And pyramids demark
Where eastern civilization
Got it's start
Listen while I sing this
Ode to ancient Memphis
Capital of Egypt
Gone but not forgot
It's quite plain to see it
They were polytheists
Temples built to honor
Every god
They were so prolific
With their hieroglyphics
Every little picture worth
A thousand words
There it's documented
All the myths and legends
Told about the gods
Of which you've heard
Ptah said the word
And the universe was born
Ra was the supreme god
Of the sun
Hathor was the goddess
Of Beauty and of love
But I've only
Just begun
Isis kept the pharaoh
On the straight and narrow
Toth, the god of music
Brought the Nile delta blues
This deity profusion's
Got me so confused
I'd like to thank god for Memphis
But I can't decide which one
Geb and his gal Nuit
Really got down to it
Between them they ruled
Both the earth and sky
Sekhmet was Ra's daughter
Bringing death and slaughter
But she also sponsored healing
On the side
When you become a mummy
Osiris gets chummy
Anubis uses Ma'at's scales
To weigh your soul
You can join the chorus
Singing praise to Horus
Lauding all his virtures
That can be extolled
Ptah said the word
And the universe was born
Ra was the supreme god
Of the sun
Hathor was the goddess
Of Beauty and of love
But I've only
Just begun
Isis kept the pharaoh
On the straight and narrow
Toth, the god of music
Brought the Nile delta blues
This deity profusion's
Got me so confused
I'd like to thank god for Memphis
But I can't decide which one

Well, Nashville’s got music stars
And the east side of Tennessee has got mountains, majestic.
But there’s one thing that they're lacking that I desperately need
And that’s a girl, and she’s in Memphis.
So, until I can get there to be with her, I’m begging you, Memphis.
Memphis, watch over her tonight.
I can’t wait for the sun, for the dawn, tomorrow,
Cause I’ll be on the road and coming up to you—
You’re only a day’s drive away.
And it’s killing me I can’t leave now
It’s been so long since the last time we were close.
But tomorrow that’s all over, we’ll kiss loneliness and heartache goodbye
But we’ve got just one more day apart…
CHORUS:
So Memphis, be good to her tonight.
Keep awake and make sure she’ll be alright
Come tomorrow I’ll be taking over
I’ll be there and never leave her side,
But for now I’m asking, no, I’m begging
Memphis, watch over her tonight.
(bridge)
(Chorus)

"Thank God for Memphis" by x-tokyo-river-god
(lyrics by Anti-M)
A shot of So-Co never comforted me.
I get no kick from that sweet iced tea
but oh....oh, thank God for Memphis!
A love for southern belles I've never felt
I've kept my blows above the Mason-Dixon belt
but oh....etc
(Her lipstick smeared, she was draped across the bar.
She asked for a ride in my rental car.)
I said I had to work but she called my bluff.
She asked, "what time do I get off?"
Oh.....etc...
I drove her home it was after 4.
She said, "wont you see me to my door"
Oh.... etc...
(Kiss with a taste of cheap chablis.
A lady wouldn't do the things she did to me.)
Delta blues, Graceland and Stax
My Northern heart relaxed.
A shot of So-Co never comforts me
I get no kick from that sweet iced tea but
Oh.

i think this is such a cool idea. i think a whole side fight where there is a set of lyrics and everyone builds their own song around it would be really fun. any lyricists interested in contributing something like that?

Thank God For Memphis
by Billy's Little Trip
-verse-
Always at the bottom,
thinking outside
Drowning in my inspiration,
rotting out from the inside
-chorus-
Embalming all of my organs,
kill me comfortably slow
Evaporate all of the fluids,
liver heart of coal
-verse-
Genetically addictive,
always will and always was
Memphis spirits console me,
always will and always does
-chorus-
Lay my fight less bones down,
let the vultures pick at my flesh
Passed down predisposition,
pull the black lungs out of my chest

Thank God for Memphis
Memphis, Tennessee
I really owe you
You ripped the heart right out of me
I want to wake up
On an unfamiliar floor
Lips cracked from drinkin'
Back in Memphis town once more
All my straight roads run into a bend
Every one that hates me is a friend
The river runs but I always know it's there
Memphis, I despise you 'cause I care
Thank God for Memphis
Where the King was run to ground
I nearly met him
When I rushed his flaming mound
He lit a fire
That brought me to my knees
Then I saw Elvis
In ones and twos and threes
All my straight roads run into a bend
Every one that hates me is a friend
The river runs but I always know it's there
Memphis, I despise you 'cause I care
Thank God for Memphis
A city born from soul
I hope you're happy
Now that mine's as black as coal
I hear your laughing
As I ride right out of town
But I can't leave you
You've known that since I came around

Nice work everyone. Can't wait to hear these.
I've been on the road so long singin the same song
I need to fill my cup
It's the middle of the summer and it's hot down by the river
But this side's in the shade
Thank God for Memphis, Oh Yeah...
I'm standing in the street and melting in the heat
and I'm staring at the sun
My honey don't like Elvis, she really couldn't care less
but I know he's the King
Thank God for Memphis, Oh Yeah...

Thank God for Memphis
By Ross Durand
I love a girl and Memphis is her name
Never loved that town, but I love her just the same
And I still recall when I first held her in my arms
I was helpless against her precious charms
Well no one knew her name when her mama laid her on those steps
So she took the name of that city, we haven't found a better one yet
No one will ever know why her mother left her and walked away
But all I know is I thank God for Memphis every day
When I met Memphis she was only three days old
It's hard to describe, it seems like so long ago
I'll never understand why someone would give a gift like her away
But I thank God for Memphis every day
Yes I thank God for Memphis every day
Lord of Oats TGFM Lyrics

by Lord of Oats
It's the second largest metropolitan area, in the state of Tennessee
Surpassed only by Nashville, it's a place I'd like to be
But all of its size, doesn't even compare to the look in your eyes
Thank God for Memphis
Thank God for you
It's a real nice city, but I must give you your due
And I am really happy
that you got on that plane
Yes, I'm so glad that you came
Johhny Cash and Elvis and B.B. King, all got started there
And its barbeque is known for tasting so good, it's famous everywhere
Yes, its musical and culinary contributions to the south are quite renowned,
but before you I was lost, and now I'm found
And I thank God for Memphis
But I really thank Him for you
I bet Missouri is really missin' you
But I am oh so satisfied
that you got on the plane
I'm so glad that you came
(Solo, k?)
I realize I'm not someone that you think you really know
But it's gonna be so hard, to watch you go
Thank God for Memphis
Thank God for you
Maybe someday we'll travel there, under skies of blue
I know it's not because of me
that you got on the plane
But I'm so glad
And I hope it doesn't sound too weird to you
But I've just got this feelin', that I can't explain
And it makes me so glad, that you came
