Give me something to do!

Hi, I'm new here, if you can't tell. Work isn't taking up too much of my time this time of year, and I have nothing else going on, so I'm looking for some more outlets of this type. It helps to have a focal point when I'm writing, and I think Song Fight! will fit me just about perfectly, and I entered as soon as I found out about it, but the pace is a little too slow. I feel like I've got a little more in me than one every two or three weeks. I rushed to get the TGFM entry in, and realized I could write more quickly than I had thought, only to have the deadline extended. So I was just kind of sitting around here, and I haven't come across anything in this category that it looks like there's still time for me to do. Not that my boredom is your problem, but if anyone knows of any other songwriting outlets that are currently active, I'd like to know about them. I know of the Album-a-Day project, which is actually how I found this site. I've done one of those, and I'm looking for a hosting solution, but it doesn't look like that's being updated anymore, anyway, and it's just a little fast-paced for me. This probably isn't precisely the place, but I'm also open to collaborations, if anybody is working on something, for whatever purpose, I'm interested in working on music in any capacity.

There aren't any other "official" songwriting contests here, beside the one going on on the main songfight.org page. However, side fights and other themed songwriting activities come up a lot. You could also pick titles from the archives if you're looking for a starting point for a song. Or you could try to have a "skirmish", which is an unofficial competition to write a song in a very small amount of time, like an evening. Basically other than the main "official" fight the side competitions are just folks like you saying "Hey, let's do this!" So if no one is saying that, then it's up to you to do it. You may not always get the reaction you want, but if you have an idea people like they'll get on board and do songs, too.

Check out
Tuneflow for 4 songs a month, Johnny Cashpoint's
SUK that's about one song a month, coupled with SongFight! here that'll give you at least 7 songs a month to work on....
...plus any random stuff you come up with can alway be submitted over at
Somesongs.

Thanks. These look pretty cool. I'll definitely be entering SUK. I'm a little short on time for this other one, though.

In February there's FAWM.org where you write 14 songs in 28 days but that's a long ways off yet. And next year is a leap year, so how will that be handled anyway?
oh oh oh oh oh oh oh pick me ... pick me
I know ... just write some songs. and tell people about them. or make your own challenge and launch a TV series (if you're REALLY bored).

Something else you may see mentioned around songfight is hxaro! ("schwaro") which is our misappropriation of a term for some sort of African tribal exchange thing. What it has come to mean here is doing a cover version of somebody else's songfight song. Of course, this also requires figuring out a "hosting solution," but hxaro is kinda cool in that these covers are generally not critiqued and the person whose song you covered is generally thrilled to hear somebody else do their song.
You may also see references to "Dux," which is a hxaro cover of a song that received no votes at all in the weekly fight. And then every now and then the Secret Hxaro Santa will come out of hiding and organize a lovefest where a bunch of people cover a particular person's songs, and the covered person gets a special treat, their very own tribute album
I know it's not songwriting, but you can generally be quite creative in your "interpretation" of somebody else's song, and it's a good way to hone those honing skills...

Yet another way to fill your nights...
Hi There,
Katya of OddioOverplay.com here with an invitation to participate in
our new casual audio exhibit,
THE ART OF THE RANT.
It was inspired by people putting music to a rant by Mr. Dante Fontana
of PCL LinkDump. The project is open to musicians, poets, performance
artists, nutcases and ANYONE who has a good rant bubbling up inside
them.
I hope you will let off some steam into the mic and join us at:
Exhibit: The Art of the Rant

Cheers,
Katya

Denyer entered SUK a couple of months back, so I would say no.

Yeah, I did too. Check the FAQ:
Although this little game is meant primarily for British Songwriters, we don't turn anyone away. Not even Americans!

I'm competing in the current one. So no. Though I do have English ancestry...
