The Song Fight Bulletin Board

Well, howdy all.

Works quite the bully today.... That's a phrase I don't think anyone's ever used... maybe I've started something.

Management is busy and in a psuedo-bad mood, which means that things are gonna be rough back here for the next few days. Just LOAD me up with stuff to do, why don't ya?

Question of the Day: Do you often find that, in general, when you're done with your songs, they sound much different than you had pictured at first?

This is often the case with me. I start with one guitar riff or chord progression, and by the time the song is done, I could have entered a whole new genre!

Roll Call: Workin'. Tonight is up in the air. One way or another, I'll be playing music at some bar. After the Red Sox game, of course.*

QotD: It happens like that sometimes. But I generally prefer the songs where the result is closest to what I had in mind.

*Not that I'll be glued to the set or anything. It's more a matter of bar patrons wanting to hear the game instead of me warbling at them.

Work is cranking and I'm taking a break to clear my mind, looking over ground zero construction which at this stage appears to be moving at a snail's pace, though I'm sure big things are happening somewhere down there.

QotD: I rarely know what my song will sound like until I finish. There have been only a few that were conceived in final form, otherwise the recording/production process really is the songwriting process for me. Instrumentation, arrangement, even meter is up for grabs until the section is recorded. The effects of final mix can be minimal to extreme, sort of a what-track-will-survive reality show. Then there are a couple songs where I record what I wrote pretty much straight and spend most of my time on subtle EQ. Or not.

Yeah, it often ends up sounding different from the way I imagined. Occasionally it sounds a lot like I intended, but I think I keep my imagination vague on purpose.

qotd: it depends on how hard I try to focus on my goal for a song. I try not to go into any song with a hard conceived outcome. Every once and a while a song will need that focus from me and I put forth that effort... I'm pretty disappointed. (which is why I try not to go into any song with a hard conceived outcome) However, every once and a blue moon I get exactly what I was going for.

Wednesday has turned out to be the busiest day of the week for us all this week.

Qotd: no they are sometimes a little different, but usually pretty close to what I started out imagining.

You are kidding, right? I have NO IDEA what the song is going to sound like until sometime in the middle of the night AFTER we have recorded it.

QOTD: My songs all end up sounding the same anyways, so yeah - I usually have a rough idea of what I'm going to end up with.

ps - another frenzy has come and gone. This time, there were some new faces, including Spinlock and Jeff Henderson. Me and Lord of Oats partook in yet another week of frenzying.

I play chords and sing, and imagine the other instruments, and then I record everything, and it sounds pretty close to what I'd imagined. The exception is probably with guitar solos and such. Sometimes, I might hum a few lines of guitar, and I probably should more often, but in a lot of cases, I just try to figure out the chords that will facilitate good soloing, and so I leave some room for that, and then improvise something over it when that time comes.

But it's a good time over there, seriously.

Andrew and I are currently tied for the most continuous entries. Somehow, I don't think I'll ever overtake him. But I can try to hold on to the shared record.

QOTD:
The gist of my songs come out as I planned, but quite often with cool twists and turns to either make it more interesting or make it not so good. I find that if a song starts going south on me, I just eliminate everything that was added to my original basic idea and start over when I'm in a better frame of "mind". My vocals aren't beautiful and I'm not a schooled musician, so I depend on my creativity to form an idea for a song. Without creativity, BLT is nothing.
In a nutshell, yes, my songs come out pretty much how I imagined them to be, before I start recording.
