The 5th Annual Gift of Music!!!!

'Tis the season for our yearly version of Secret Santa, it's:
2007/2008 GIFT OF MUSIC
Here's the concept:
Anyone who wants to be a part of this cover challenge simply needs to post here, telling me that they're in and listing 4 songs (links to the songs are appreciated). These 4 songs are 4 songs that you really like and would like to hear covered. Once the list of participants is compiled, the names will be tossed into a hat and paired off.
From there, each participant will get a private message telling them who they'll be giving the gift of music to as well as the 4 songs that person chose. The participant picks 1 song from the 4 and covers the song. Then on the due date, we post the results and everybody wins.
It's Secret Santa meets Coverfight meets Hxaro with incredible results. The previous GoMs have been exceptional. Check them out on Eddiebangs' website Soul Tree Records:

Are there going to be any other stipulations (like last year's Collaborators thing)? If not, I'd be well up for this and you can count me in.

Last year's stipulation thing went over like a lead balloon. No stipulations this year.

Yay! I'm gonna make it in this year!
Ok, I'm posting the same (aborted) list as last year, I think:
Pere Ubu: "Heaven"
Built to Spill: "Joyride"
Palace Bros: "New Partner"
Shellac: "The Guy Who Invented Fire"
I will attempt to update this list with actual links to the music when I'm not at work.
Thanks for organizing this, Niv!

Yeah! I was just thinking a day or two ago that this should be coming up. I am in, and hope to get started earlier this year. Will post my list later on, need to think on it.
Thanks Niv and Eddie.

I am in.
If it's not bending the rules too much, I would like to suggest that ANY SONG from my top 10,000 list would be a satisfactory gift. There's bound to be 'something' in there that someone would recognize and love to cover.
Rachael is also in, and I'm sure that she would also be fine with anything from her top 10,000 blog.
I'll leave this up to Niveous. I'm fine with narrowing down my choices to 4 if need be.
ROCK!

Do you really want to post links to 10,000 songs?

Heh. I'm only up to 384 choices as of yesterday, but it is true that I don't care to have mp3 links for each.
What I am figuring is that there is bound to be something that my gifter will recognize that won't require an mp3 link. In many cases, my song choices also have YouTube links (if they haven't been removed).
The sort by cover page would work best for seeking out the songs with YouTube links if my gifter wanted to challenge themselves with a song they are unfamiliar with.
I've gotta say, if I had a big list like this to choose from, I would actually be a little relieved. Sometimes you're stuck with a list of 4 songs that you've never heard, and none of them jump out at you. Then again, maybe the challenge is one of the appealing things about the small list.
ROCK!

I'd like to participate and will think about choices while I'm travelling. (I'll be back in a week) Hey, if I can mutilate Songfighter songs, why not go for the big leagues too, eh?

Unless someone gets sneaky and picks all Song Fight! songs, and you get their list.
ROCK!

Doh! That's quite true. But I don't think you'd dare after what I did to your
Take A Pill earlier this year!

Drat! Oh well, it was worth a shot. I'll narrow it down and come up with a list in the near future. Rachael will too.

I am in, as per usual-like. I am in completely and utterly. Bask in my inner in-ness. Remember the sound effect when the bionic people ran in slow-mo: "in-in-in-in-in-in-in-in-in-in-in-in-in"? Yeah, it's like that.
It seems like I really want Jim Tyrrell's list every year, and this year is most definitely no exception. Bungle AND Police AND Joe Jackson??? Holy crap...
Song and links to come.

So... I've actually found all of my music online... but some of it is in podcasts, which I know is less convenient than just pointing to an MP3.
If someone picks my name and doesn't want to deal with the podcast thing, enlist a third party to contact me and I'll post the files to him / her and he/she can then forward them on. (I'm too paranoid to host 'em publicly myself.)
Here are the links! (Hopefully they'll stay put):
First, the podcast ones.
"The Guy Who Invented Fire" is more or less the first song in a podcast on
THIS page. Scroll down to the show titled "The Ninth Configuration." You can opt to download or stream the show. The song starts at about 2 minutes 50 seconds in.
"New Partner" is the first song on the first podcast
HERE
The other two are easier.
"Heaven" is
HERE
"Joyride" is
HERE
Whew. Next time I'm picking slightly less obscure songs.
