So far it's been a decent day for Niveous. I got my work evaluation and got a good one. It's GoM assignment day and that's always fun. And I'm prepping for a trip to CT.

(NOTE: New England sports fans have a good opportunity here to portray themselves as something other than a mob of cocky drunken meatwhistles. QotD: The first thing that came to mind was Alone Again, Naturally by Gilbert O'Sullivan. But maybe it's Country Death Song by Violent Femmes. Or maybe one of a dozen different Smiths songs.

QOTD: Pretenders -- "2000 Miles" (or whatever it's called... morning memory's not all that hot, heh).

for me, i can't think of alot of songs that are inherantly sad in and of themself, but a few come to mind, like "let it be" or "the long and winding road".

but there are alot of songs that i associate with moments in my life that were sad, and when i hear the song, it might not be a sad song but it might make me sad.

for instance, when jerry garcia died, i had a really hard time listening to "franklins tower" mostly because it defined him in so many ways, and i had seen him sing it live so many times and it invoked so many strong happy memories of days past.

anyways, sad....shit i'm on vacation! no time for that.

man, it's been hot as hell in santa cruz past couple days, not from those nasty fires which are hundreds of miles south of here, but its our awesome indian summer spell we get in late october every year.

looking like a day at the beach today for me. i might finally get around to reading the deathly hallows. dumbledore is gay! what a kick. good for rowling for stirring this up.

That's a tough question. "Sunday Bloody Sunday" definitely goes in the top 5.

The first one I thought of is "If You Could Read My Mind" by Gordon Lightfoot, about a relationship that's faded away and the couple doesn't know how to get it back together.

and I got to say that I just don't get it
I don't know where we went wrong
but the feeling's gone
and I just can't get it back"

There's another song, "Grow Old With Me", that is not sad at all, but after my wedding and then my grandfather's death always makes me think of him, but that's not the song itself.

QOTD - Some Johnny Cash performances have given me chills as an adult, but the first sad song that I thought of is one I don't really know, as I haven't heard it in what must be 30+ years. It was a very sad song about a guy who was famous, or traveled a lot, and came back to find his wife had committed suicide and left him an oh, my darling note. All I can remember was part of the chorus that said something like: " Mela...mela...melany" and did this whole step down slidey thing. I think it was a solo artist and not a group, but am not sure. AM radio, 1972 or 73, maybe. Anyone?

I am excited about the GOM as well, and looking forward to the World Series tonight, although I am not a foaming at the mouth sports fan. I agree with Jim's fan comments and hope there aren't any killing sprees, regardless of who wins. How about a nice, tight series with the Rockies losing in 7. Hoo-ray!

Weird Al has a sad song called "Melanie" <i>"why wont you go out with me?</i> I love that song

His best 'sad' song though has to be "One More Minute" <i> with you </i>

I'd rather clean all the toilets in Grand Central Station with my tongue.... Then spend, one more minute with you. - Classic.

As far as sad songs, Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, the Jeff Buckley version especially.

The Israel Kamakawiwo Ole version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow is pretty sad I think.

I také Acela to DC when I visit Discovery. It's so nice in the quiet car. No phones allowed. No loud talking. It's like a library traveling 80 mph. So why is this guy sitting next to me eating the most disgustingly smelly, goopy chinese food imaginable? Is that even allowed? ADD's "Towering Infernal" is playing. Brilliant!

QotD: There's a french song about a horse that dies. It is sad even without knoiwing French. I'll have to look it up. Really sad.

The Cure is sad but more in a makes-me-want-to-kill-myself sort of way. I don't think any other band ever has affected me in that way to that degree.

Oh yeah, that song "Shannon" about the guys dog that died. That is a tear jerker.
