The Song Fight Bulletin Board

Ever since the last hard drive explosion, I've been unable to play or burn any wavs with WMP. They will play in audacity, so file corruption isn't the issue.

Also, windows will not even recognize normal audio cd's as having any tracks on them. It just gives me an error message, and the cd appears blank or has a single 0kb .cda file in explorer.

WMP is also unable to webfind the codex required, but when has it ever found any needed codex? Like, ever? God WMP sucks.

It sounds like you need some codecs that probably got corrupted or are simply not there anymore. Windows repair. If that doesn't help you'll need to manually figure out what you need to install / repair your default windows codecs.

I'd say try reinstalling your sound card. It IS possible that it's using the wrong drivers or some plug & play drivers that may work but aren't designed to work with your card. HOWEVER, I doubt that its the sound card.

What Hoblit said, but also, what bitdepth are your WAVs? WMP gets weird about 24-bit sometimes.

That is a good point. I used to make the mistake of trying to play 24/48 but tacks in MP. It can only do 16/44.1

I can play 24/48 tracks in mine no problem. (I'm playing one right now, just to make sure before I said anything)

Sober: Open WMP, click Tools>Options> Click the 'File Types' tab, click 'Select All', Ok, close and restart WMP. I suspect something has hijacked your file associations, which you later uninstalled, and it left everything in limbo.

What? The way I see it, Hoblit said "Windows repair" and "reinstall sound card drivers" which are both good options to try.

Hoblit name-dropped "windows repair", which is what, exactly? Then he suggested that "If that doesn't help you'll need to manually figure out what you need to install / repair your default windows codecs." So in the one case, I have to figure out what "windows repair" is and how to run it, or to figure out how to install or repair the codecs myself. Duh.

He further suggested both to try reinstalling your sound card, and that he doubted that its (sic) the sound card. Kind of a wash, there, if you ask me.

I'm not down on Hoblit, just saying his advise was, well, kind of limp.

Okay, then, windows repair is when you put in the XP CD, and boot to it, and say "install Windows", and then it asks if you want to repair.
"Reinstall soundcard" == "reinstall soundcard drivers".

1. Windows repair... can be done from CD (or hard disk drive copy if you opted for it during install) <b>Didn't realize that was cryptic. </b> (EDIT: like Heuristics describes.)

2. Exactly. Because *I don't know* doesn't mean he shouldn't ever look in that general direction. There are a ton of codec packs out there on top of that.

3. If all else fails, re-install the sound card. Usually takes just a minute or two and sometimes clears things right up. So what if I have my own doubts, shouldn't he try it anyways? Perhaps my statement itself lacked self confidence?
