Hmmm, this is going to take some thought. The first thing that jumped to mind was The Doors. I enjoyed Val Kilmer's take on Jim Morrisson (one of the only VK performances I enjoy) but I've seen a bunch more music movies in recent years that I should consider.

Rock and Roll High School. Period.

Does Forbidden Zone count? That's right up there too.

Roll Call: I got my car back last night, so it's back to business. Going down to The Shaskeen in Manchester tonight for the open mic (and a pint or two).

I was gonna say Walk The Line, but you asked rock and roll, so ... I always liked those old Elvis flicks. As for concert movies, U2's Zoo TV in Sydney (1993) was pretty effective.

qotd: Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure because it's stupidly hilarious and makes me feel most excellent.

I like when they hug each other and then move away all repulsed and then in unison say Fag! and then they laugh and high five. I think Bill and Ted secretly want to marry each other.

It is possible to Overtap, y'know, to the point where you don't ever want to see the movie again.

This Is Spinal Tap, hands down. Probably not only my favorite rock movie, but my favorite movie of all time, ever, in the history of man. Ever.

Big Bottom FTW. But it's all great: Sex Farm, Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight, Jazz Odyssey (did the Jazz Odyssey joke originate in that film, or had it been around before that?), um, what else? Jeez, I need to watch it again. I like how they make fun of so many different styles of rock. I can't remember the titles, but I like the sort of proggy, really pretentious numbers. Those were some of the most fun. A real highlight is when one of them is at some venue, alone on stage, doing the most horrible, indulgent guitar wank ever. There's just too much good stuff in it.

The only other rock movie I can think of having seen is probably School of Rock, on DVD at some party thing, back when it was, like, a current DVD release. Now it's on one of the cheapo racks at Target, (the $7.50 rack, I believe.)

Actually, the $7.50 rack is definitely where I got my copy of This Is Spinal Tap. I saw it advertised in Target's circular at that price, and drove there immediately to buy it, having wanted to see it for quite a long time. The film is easily worth several times that.

Oh, I bought Frank Zappa's Baby Snakes, out of curiosity, if that counts. So far, I haven't made it through the whole thing. When I ordered that, I also got Koyaanisquatsi, (doesn't count, I guess, unless you think Glass is rock) but I haven't watched it yet.

Almost Famous Awesome! See this movie if you haven't already. Philip Seymour Hoffman as Lester Bangs? I think I just came in my pants.

Dazed & Confused Not a music movie as such, but so rock and roll it hurts. In a good way. Anyone who disagrees is probably mistaking it for the shit mag of the same name.

Rude Boy not a particularly great film, but far and away the best live footage of the Clash.

The Grateful Dead Movie.

Spinal Tap, a close second.

On a tangent, the worst music movie I have seen (and there are plenty) the Village People movie. That sucks Steve Guttenberg's ass, which is nowhere any self-respecting movie audience should go.

I have yet to see a good rock 'n roll movie. I was close to seeing spinal tap once.

Ah yes, as a side note, I saw a horrible movie called Rock Star, starring Mark Wahlberg, and that bitch from Friends was his girlfriend. I watched it once, and said, "Well, that held my attention. That's enough of that." The only specific thing I really remember about the experience was learning, upon watching the credits, that Jason Bonham was the drummer in the movie band, and going, "Oh. Cool." And I think there was some big drunken sex party scene or something. And everything was totally lame and stereotypically Hollywood. Like it might almost be making some kind of sincere statement, if on the one hand, it had been presented more convincingly, and on the other, if it weren't the same statement made by every single Disney movie.

QOTD: By the way, as you can probably tell by my subject line "The Wall" is probably my favorite, although as Beatles fan I have to put "Hard Day's Night" and "Let it Be" on the list. I also love "This is Spinal Tap" (Rent it JR - skip class or something, but see it). I saw "Gimme Shelter" on TV this summer and was pretty blown away by that, too.

I'll post again about the ones that I forgot.

How come no one has mentioned that Kiss movie at the amusement park?
