QotD: I'd still have to say Yes. I am a U2 fan, but they're not nearly as close to my heart as Yes was in the day. OK, and the Beatles, certainly.

Not sure what other super groups I was into other than those. I didn't like Genesis by the time they achieved "super" status. But I just noticed your question is very current-tense. Who are the current super groups? Or do you mean those weird amalgam of super-stars like GTR or The Traveling Wilburys?

By "supergroup" I assume you mean a group comprised of musicians previously well known who unite to form a new musical underataking.

I think mine is Crosby, Stills, and Nash (and sometimes Young).

The travelling Wilburys were cool too, if a bit inconsistent.

In that case, probably none that I'm aware of. Although there was a band called UK for a year or two...Bill Bruford, Alan Holdsworth, John Wetton, and Eddie Jobson. And ELP. I'm so stuck in the 70s.

All snarkiness aside, I'm having a hard time answering today's QotD. I think Led Zeppelin qualifies, but it's not like I was familiar with any of those guys before that band (that I was aware of at the time, anyway). I just don't remember ever seeing a bunch of musicians I like get together and form a group that knocked the ol' socks off. I'll keep thinking about it.

EDIT: One time in Bearsville, NY, I saw Donald Fagen play a show. It was a warm up for that Rock and Soul Revue tour that he did with Phoebe Snow and a few other people. Anyway, I guess there was a separate bar in the place for celebrities or something, because for the encore he was able to round up a couple guys from The Hooters and Cyndi Lauper to join him on stage. Now THERE'S a supergroup.

We could hijack this thread and talk about these kinds of one-offs. I've seen some funny group mash-ups. Two that come to mind:

- Debbie Harry fronting The Ramones at an aids benefit
- Wynonna Judd fronting Queen at the Songwriters Hall of Fame

Yeah, and Cyndi Lauper at Roger Waters' The Wall in Berlin was great! Was that with Scorpion or some German metal band?

ELP and Audioslave were pretty solid.

Most of the incarnations of King Crimson since Larks' Tongues era (inclusive) feel like supergroups, since most of the members are known otherwise, or were at least in some other band.

all on its own like that, or maybe dig up an image of their first album cover, but Hoblit beat me to mentioning them in a much less funny manner. Boo. But in reality, Heat of the Moment is an awesome song, despite the verse being almost the same as Video Killed the Radio Star, (hell, maybe that's why it is so awesome). And yes, that is the guy from the Buggles playing keyboards for Asia. But honestly, I've never felt like I needed to listen to any of their other songs. So I haven't. Not once, ever. But I've listened to HOTM hundreds of times.

There was a one-off recording session that got released as a record called "Brian May and Friends" it features Brian May and Eddie Van Halen trading blues solos. I think the drummer was from REO Speedwagon or something.

And don't forget the Seamus Collective.

There's a ska group called SKAndalous All-Stars that does covers, most notably awesome versions of Radiohead's Creep and The Ramones' "I Wanna Be Sedated."

I was listening to UK this morning... it's pretty good.

King Crimson, if that counts, then that's my favorite.

YES! And you keep me honest, my friend. I can see John Waters, sitting in his director's chair "Cyndi, Cyndi - can you dress like a school girl?"

I went to class drunk tonight. It was great. Next is work. I think I have successfuly masked the smell of gin on my breath. We will see.
