It is about time I use my geographical advantage and start one of these.
Election '07 is upon us. In 3 days Australia goes to the polls.
I'm not sure if George W Bush actually knows where Australia is - but on Saturday - his biggest international cheerleader is due to to get an almighty boot up the arse....we hope.
3 years ago - some 51% of the Australian public disgraced themselves and their country by re-electing the Lying Little Cunt who is now our Prime Minister. They ignored the lies about WMDs and the illegal invasion of Iraq. They ignored the lies about children being thrown overboard by refugees. They supported the imprisonment of children in desert detention camps without charge or trial. They ignored his support of American illegal imprisonment and torture. They could live with the fact that we Australians - the most proliferate polluters on Earth (along with our American cousins) - refused to ratify the Kyoto Protocol and accept our responsibility to address the global problem that we have created. They voted out of they own greed and re-elected the most morally corrupt government this country has ever seen.
I have spent the last 3 years deeply ashamed of my country. Both of its government - and the people that elected that government. I will no longer stand for that - and if those Lying Cunts are re-elected - I will move.
Todays QOTD is - if you had to move from your home country - where would you go to?
Our current list of preference is:
1. New Zealand
2. Ireland
3. England
4. Canada
5. Thailand or Indonesia
(NZ - sure they cheat at football and fuck sheep - but it is a nice place. Canada would rate higher, but it is too bloody cold there - and there is the Bryan-Adams-factor. And the Thai/Indon option - well, they are my favourite places for holidays - but the whole, non-English-speaking thing does get a bit much for a place to live - and I have lived for 2 years in Kiribati - it is hard to really feel at home in foreign language places)

Only 3? Try 7 plus! But get'em Ray! Knock that little weasal out for your international brotherhood!
QOTD - Sorry for any of my northern neighbors, but I'd move to Canadia in an instant. I think about it often as it is. Probably on either end though, and not in the vast middle. I also like that little country to the west of me called Vermont.

I'm surprised that England would be on your list considering the political reasons you'd leave Australia for.
qotd: I wouldn't want to move to Canada for the same reason (too effing cold) but I do have family there and its the most realistic choice. Its the only *cough* foreign country I've ever been to.
Israel? I'm not Jewish but everyone that I've ever met from Israel have always been some of the most kind and well educated people. All of them spoke English too.
Depending on circumstances, I'd try to find somewhere warm. Depending on the circumstances (grab your tinfoil hat) I'd much rather flank Tallahassee while advancing to Washington D.C.

Actually - it has been 11 years. Though of that - merely some 6 years of mediocre government (2 of which, I wasn't in the country anyway) - then the shit hit the fan in 2001 with the
Tampa affair. From that point on it has been all rasicm/GWB arselicking/climate change denial/Iraqi murdering/prisoner torturing fun.
Then in 2004 - we (sorry..they) re-elected the prick!!
Hoblit wrote:I'm surprised that England would be on your list considering the political reasons you'd leave Australia for.
No - you should be surprised for cricketing and rugby reasons. There is no political problem.
Sure - I still don't understand why Tony Blair went a bit strange and followed GWB into Iraq - but he is gone now anyway. And at least the UK got their prisoners released from Guantanamo Bay. David Hicks stayed there for over 5 years without charge or trial - until a shady deal between Cheney and Howard got him sent home (he is due to be released 4 weeks after the election - surprise, surprise!)
And all that besides... - the UK ratified the Kyoto Protocol - which - all silly anti-terrorism adventures aside - is by far the most important issue facing the world today. That Australia (and the USA) has ignored climate change for so long is absolutely disgraceful.
edit:
---------------
heh! - did we skip 20 November! You slow bastards at the arse-end of the world - I started this thread just after midnight, on Wednesday morning. Youse have gotta keep up.

I was going to say something like "if I had to leave the US I'd head to Vermont". I don't plan on running away just because I didn't get things my way, however. Our system sort of works because it can change, even if only in subtle ways. So I'd likely stay, but I sure wish a bunch of people would leave

Good points, Roymond. Although as I look outside and see the first snow of the season announcing itself and my back starts creaking, running away to some palm tree filled area instead of a northerly one starts sounding pretty good. Pretty, though.

I'm not planning on leaving the country, but the question is "what if we had to". I think it would be Canada probably, since Buffalo (where I grew up) is almost in Canada and Burlington VT (where M's parents live) is very close also. If it had to be a foreign-language place, I'd say Italy since it's the language we are studying and it's a great place. Had a lot of fun when we visited there on the Honeymoon (no, not in Polynesia).

I agree it's cold here, but there are exceptions. British Columbia is a lot milder than anywhere else here (from what I can tell). If you hate cold, don't come to Calgary (it's minus 13 C right now - I hate winter.) Try Kelowna BC - it's a really nice place (if a bit expensive and touristy). Kamloops is a nice little BC desert too - I would live there.
If I had to move countries, it would probably be to the states - as much as I hate the country itself, it's got some nice cities (and I LOVE California). I've heard that Wales has some really nice people, and I've got some welsh blood, so I could try that. Sweden would be cool - great metal scene and an interesting tax system.

CR: I'm surprised it took you this long to do the whole "I'm across the IDL from you yanks!" thing.
If I had to move to another country I'd go to the UK, because they have better TV there. Also I'd still be able to work as a software engineer and make a reasonable wage. Also easy access to places with good food.
Second choice is either Australia or New Zealand, though I may be too fat for them.
Third choice would be Canada, with the caveat that I'd be looking for a better-paying profession (software engineers are apparently paid very poorly there). They have government subsidies for musicians, right?
When I was in high school I fantasized about Finland for some reason. I'm pretty sure that'd be hell for me now.

Hmmm...that may keep me out of NZ too

Not sure about immigration keeping the fatties out of here, but they may have to pay a
fat tax on their airline ticket to get here.
Reïst wrote:Sweden would be cool - great metal scene and an interesting tax system.
Yeah...tax system. Sure...
SWEDISH women have launched a campaign to fight for the right to go topless on beaches and in swimming pools, saying they have just as much right to go without clothes as men...The campaign's strategy has reportedly been a raging success, with members of Just Breasts jumping into swimming pools across the country wearing nothing more than bikini bottoms.
röymond wrote:I don't plan on running away just because I didn't get things my way, however.
Well, the truth is we are considering moving overseas for a while anyway, for completely unrelated reasons - but I still wouldn't like to miss the opportunity of storming off in an indignant huff if I get the chance.

QOTD:
Australia Coast. Not sure where, but they have great waves, AND you get to drive on the wrong side of the road....on purpose.
But really my first choice would be, and quite possibly will be the Caribbeans. I'd say either Barbados or the Cayman islands, not sure which. But in a non touristy part.
By the way, I have no problem with the United States, we have our ups and downs and I intend to stick it out like a true American. But when I'm older and paid my dues, I want to live out my days on an island on the beach.
.......preferably as the King.

Actually - I could probably add California to the list too. I though Santa Cruz was a very cool place when I was there last year - I can't get enough of those sea otters. And (from a distance, anyway) Big Arnie seems like a pretty cool dude government-wise.

This week is an important week for us. As Ray says, election for our souls this weekend, but more importantly, the final show for Get This airs on Friday. Sad times, indeed.
I am still unsure who exactally to vote for, though I do know who not to vote for. So that narrows it down somewhat.
QOTD: Canada and New Zealand sound nice. New York would be interesting, though if imported cop shows set in NYC are anything to go by, I would be murdered or embroiled in a murder plot, which I have so far avoided here. And I live in Murder City!

Im Welsh, and a lovely country it is too.
Beautiful scenery, reasonably decent people, and great close harmony singing.
Its just the whole occupied oppression thing thats a pain. The government here just sucks. Evik, corrupt and provably incompetent.
Ray,
Dude England (the whole U.K. and Wales) is as bad as Australia, seriously.
But the truth is where can ya go. Its the same people running the same scam in every country.
BTW. Kyoto sucks, its just a way to bring about more international law, which then leads eventually to a global government. And anyway climate change is natural, ask the romans about how far north they grew vineyards, or Mars (and other cellestialbodies) why they are suffering global warming too, do they have too many SUVs on their roads. Do they have roads....

It's my birthday now.

And yes I'm drunk....

Yes - I guess you are right. But I still maintain that the bloke we have now is easily the worst I have ever seen.

Hey! I never thought of it that way. You are absolutely right! It's all a big con!
How embarrassing! Here's me - 15 years professional experience as an environmental scientist, years studying geology, hydrology, coastal engineering and whatever else to get a masters degree in natural resource management - attending countless conferences and seminars on global warming, sea-level rise, etc - and all this time, my collegues and I have had it all completely wrong! I've wasted my life. I feel so silly.
Have the IPCC been round to your place yet to get your thoughts on the subject? I'm sure you'll be a big help. Wait till I get a hold of that crazy Milutin Milankovic and his wacky ideas about orbital forcing!

You should have made him lie there and listen. Next time he'd think twice about freeloading off his brother.
Unless of course, he'd get off on it. Or he's better looking than you, in which case it could have turned up that it was you lyin there and listening.
The obvious solution? BATHROOM. or PUBLIC SEXING. Never let anything get in the way of a cuteass. They come along rarely.
Also, CR, i wouldn't move to New Zealand. Think about watching sports in public spaces. unless you're gonna shift allegiances there as well.
