Piracy a measure of success?

My wife does marketing for a local university, and she's in the loop for coming across this kind of stuff. Anyway this article tries to answer the question: Is piracy a measure of success? I don't know how much credibility the writer has, but it sounds reasonable. But if lots of people steal your stuff does it means they like it a lot, or only like it if it's free? Anyway if it's true, the TV industry is a little bit ahead of the music industry on the question of piracy.
I'd imagine musicians of all flavors would find this interesting, whether big label or Songfighters and everything in between.
