Promoting Music Outside of Song Fight!

A master list of links will be kept here:

somesongs
Slicethepie
thesixtyone
GarageBand
MySpace Music
Podsafe Music Network

This is the list of sites I know of so far.

In this thread:

1. Recommendations of web sites on which one can promote their own music.
2. Descriptions of experiences with said web sites.
3. Strategic discussions regarding individual artists, this community, or artists on the whole.
4. Suggestions of items to add to this list.

As per 3. Strategic discussions

In pursuing exposure at Slicethepie, I've come to a stage where I have to upload my three best songs. This isn't something I've considered much, and I'm not sure I'm the best judge of it, anyway.

Open question: What are my three (or any number you like) best songs?

This information will likely be useful at other sites as well, and for other artists. Others may find it useful to make such an inquiry here.

So if I were asking people to tell me what my worst songs were, I'd be looking to be insulted?

Go to shows. Meet musicians. Play shows. Start locally before dominating (heh) globally. Promote others if you like 'em. Do it in the meatspace as much, if not more than the cyber.

Yes.

I can think of 2 frenzies that I really liked - Message for You and The Things We Regret. Before posting them though - I'd suggest a rerecording or remix - that kick drum in Message For You is just terrible.

If you sell a physical CD via CDBaby, they will also send your songs (price included) to the download stores, e.g. iTunes and such. I do get a good number of plays via those services, esp. iTunes and Rhapsody. Not a lot of money in the end, but depending on how people are finding you it can be good exposure.

Also, I sent my CDs to Pandora (online radio). I have reached several new fans via that route. I love Pandora.

Are cdbaby.COM and cdbaby.NET both the same company? Their websites look so different they almost look like competitors for the same domain name.

they are the same. .com is the cd-buying customer interface, while .net is the interface for musicians to access their "management" interfaces.
make sense?

Just a note on this: ARGH. This option is almost completely unavailable to me. I'd rather do that. I hate the internet (almost as much as I love it).

I guess there is a little bit of a local music scene. All of it sounds like my HOMBH entry, and you're not allowed to play the shows they put on unless you sound like that. My song was lovingly dedicated to those fucking bastards.

if you are an indiana musician, there is always:
musicalfamilytree.com
which i record live shows for and which re-launches with a new build next month.
if you don't know the site, it is free to listen to and download and is a huge archive of indiana bands or people associated with indiana.
it is filled with old demo tapes, live shows, and other rarities.

http://www.soundclick.com

Soundclick is a great place for unsigned and underground artists. I have an account there. My debut CD is sold on there in fact. There are both free and pay accounts, but the free account is just fine for 90% of people anyway (myself included).

We were discussing on another thread about how you can get a lot of very brutal reviews on slicethepie.com.

Well, it is worth putting up with the harsh reviews when something like this comes through (for my "Rhymes With Lucia"):

This is what music should be, I'm getting a little sick of this web sit producing hundred of band imitating current music rather that being innovative and introducing us to a new music. Thank you I just wish every one could be artistic like you. This music is so unique to you that it would be inappropriate for me to comment on a single aspect of it in a critical way. All I can do is express how much I enjoyed listening to this.

Gotta be happy with that! :D

The best part of slicethepie has to be the consistent use of British references I don't understand. So far, I don't have any of the kind of golden reviews I get here, like yours about me perhaps wanting to shag Melvin. Nobody is very inventive with their criticisms, you know.

What do you say to having a separate thread where we can post our most amusing reviews from the site, since they're not public there?

Jamendo, if you made a full album to share.

Haven't done so myself; but it's a nice site to listen to as well.
