... because the reason most people bought a Wii deserves its own thread.

Post friend codes, play friends-only matches (especially with Nintendo's servers not handling the overload right now), discuss, etc.

I am not great, but I will happily play anyone.

Slower than Melee, Subspace Emissary is loooooooong and not really fun, love the new characters. Fox got nerfed (no fast falling is killing me), so I'm looking for a new main (Ike?). Really fun so far, overall.

Dear God, won't someone else remind me that I don't have a Wii yet?

*pathetic look for pity*

This is just a friendly reminder to inform you that I have a Wii, and you don't.

(You asked. You're welcome. That could also take on a completely different meaning if taken out of context.)

Be my friend, fellow brothers of smash. You will probably win often.

Just bought it. Can't play it yet though - got some drum/keyboard tracks to do for a MYSTERY songfighter. Won't tell you who yet, but it'll be good.

ps - http://supersmashbros.ign.com/

Apparently it'll build up thousands of downloadable custom-built stages, and if you've got an SD card, you can easily transfer them to and from your Wii. I might give it a try, but not today.

Finally beat the SSE and unlocked all the characters. Man, they're fun.

Perhaps I will see either of the two other FC-posters online sometime.

How do you find time to play it that much?

Someday I will make a friendcode aggregator, because there are a lot of games which use this friendcode nonsense now and which aren't important enough to warrant actively seeking out people to play on them.

No friends, social interaction or other activities.

would somebody who didn't like the game cube version (never played n64 one) at all find any interest in this one?

I loved the N64 one and hated the Game Cube one. The Wii one is much better than the Game Cube one, but not as good as the N64 one.

starfinger: You probably wouldn't like it. I loved both previous entries (Melee far more than the original), and love this.

Also Plat you are apparently impossible to play with. I tried joining your games several times to no avail.

So far, WFC hasn't worked at all for me. I can never find anon games and nobody ever joins mine, which tells me that either something is badly broken or nobody is trying to do anon games (and considering how the game's only been out a few days I doubt it's a lack of people trying). Also even from the menu I often get booted from WFC. Even though my Wii is right next to the 802.11g access point that it connects through, and I never have any trouble with any of the devices on the 802.11n bridge that the g AP is connected to.

My friend Josh tells me that their servers weren't ready for the load, which is stupid since they had the same sorts of problems with the release in Japan and evidently learned nothing from it. So not being able to join network games is systemic, it's not you.

Finally was able to play online tonight. A buddy from the PBC boards beat me twice, I beat them twice, and then they pummeled me on the 5th fight. It wasn't bad as far as lag goes. Very fun.

ROCK!

I've been playing online consistently since launch. Do you have your Wii port-forwarded or set to DMZ? Works fine for me.

Now for you folks to be on so we can play together.

I don't have any port-forwarding set up. Who the hell still designs protocols that need that? Other online games work just fine without any specific work (even ones which are notoriously difficult to get working, like the PS3 version of Team Fortress 2).

My wife didn't really like the N64 nor Cube version, but she likes this one. The Wiimote + Nunchuk controls make more sense to her. I still prefer the Gamecube controller.

Yeah, sorry about that. I think it was bad timing. Wednesday (?) night, I was trying to play with a local friend (his first WFC attempt), and he was pokey to join the game. So in the meantime while he was trying to get set up, I had to reject you in order to keep the slots open. Sorry; hope we get to meet up a different time though.

FWIW, I'm able to play fine with my NATted connection, both with DS and Wii games. No special "open ports", no UPnP as far as I know. Some PS2 games required me to forward ports (e.g. Burnout: Revenge). And my XBOX made me change my router's MTU value. But that's about it.

Yeah, I've managed to play a few online games since I wrote that post, although the protocol is still very fragile and it basically BSODs the system if there's any sort of packet dropout. Stupid.

Meanwhile, single-player mode is very annoying and yet I still can't stop playing it. This is the only game where I've shouted "FUCK YOU! FUCK THIS GAME!" and then kept playing. (The minigames piss me off, and so does Event 17 where you have to climb up the goddamn waterfall. And the character-unlock battles are as cheap as always.)

Meanwhile, Kirby and Pikachu are both still my favorite characters to play as, just as they were on the N64. The combination of fast response and agility over power work well with my play style. It helps that they both still play exactly like they did on N64.
